I could hear my wife laughing as she said, "Show off" in my helmet.
We had left a wedding and were heading to a b-day party on the 1998 Valk Tourer. It was a great day and tons of bikes were on the road. We were moving easy and relaxed. A sport bike pulled out of a side street behind us. When I pulled up to the stop bar at a red light I stayed on the right side of the lane in case he wanted to come up beside me. He opted to pull into the right lane. I thought he could be turning right, because that was one option. His other option was to shoot past me as his lane ran out on the other side of the stop light.
Young looking kid. Oakly riding shoes, no socks. Blue R6 in good condition. Not to loud, so it might be the stock exhaust. I looked over at him trying to say hello. He was looking at the light pattern.
I was just out to enjoy my ride.
Behind me two HDs pulled up. Both baggers. The one directly behind me (I could see his face in the mirror) was carrying a passenger too.
I was looking around not paying attention.
I heard the rpms shoot up on the R6. I looked ahead as the light turned green. He let go of his clutch, and so did I. He had the lurch, but I pulled ahead of him in the intersection. He shifted to second before he hit his red line, which was to early, and a mistake.
In the length of the burger king parking lot he had to reazlie he couldn't pass me and whip in behind me as his lane ran out.
My wife was laughing in my helmet, "Show off." A red light later she leaned up, "you couldn't resist could you? I knew you were going to do that when he tried to take off."
Over my shoulder I grinned, "I didn't do it for him. If he'd come up on my left at the light instead of my right I couldn't have stayed with him much further than that anyway."
"Sure, you didn't do it for him..."
"No, really...I didn't...I did it for the guy behind us."
"The guy behind us?" She asked.
I tapped my mirror. "You should have seen the look on that other baggers face when I took off beside that sport bike. I did it for the look on his face."

Mine will NOT run with a sport bike. Not even 1-up, and not even a 600 zip splat.
Either your valk is seriously faster than mine, or the kid on the zip-splat sucks.
Either way... fun to make a HD guy envy.

Doesn't sound like the kid knew what he was doing, shifted too soon and wasn't in the hp band.
Good story and reminded me of a bud back in 1949 that was riding a 600 cc long stroke and high gearing English Panther. He was plunking along at 30 mph in fourth (top) gear when a Salisbury(sp) scooter went around him. He dialed up the wick while in fourth but couldn't catch the scoot. He complained to the Panther dealer. The dealer ROTFL. That Panther had great torque but was only turning about 1500rpm at 30mph, just about zero torque.

Not hard to hold a 600 or beat it in first and a bit of second gear, After that it is goodbye. Do it all the time on the drag strip. Sure gets their attention

Let me see if I understand. You were able to look in your mirror and make out a guy's expression while you were accelerating and from a distance of the width of a double intersection and into the length of a Burger King parking lot? You could still focus on that very small reflection in your mirror and make out his look of amazement? Would you have posted this tall tale if you couldn't have mentioned a bagger? I was thinking that the moderators were going to keep this kind of stuff out of the new board.

Boy mcrider, talk about peeing on someones party. Of course we all know he couldn't see their faces, but if he could.......... Did I miss something along the way? Serious question, are we not supposed to post things like this, our adventures on the road? Most of us have done it at one time or another, just asking.

Other than that I'd say he got up on the wring side of the bed this morning, or someone distrubed his much needed nap.....

MCRIDER, I understand that it annoys you to see someone post anything against an HD, but I saw no harm in this one and I'm not sure why you did. It was an entertaining story, true or not and there really was no harm. As you may be aware, this is a Valkyrie board, not a Harley Ferguson board. Take a pill! Life is too short to be so angry all the time! Big IV, You will perhaps note that my usage of the word (Too) is the long version. I use the short version when I'm going someplace!

Big IV, I've had similar experiences. It's a shame that others don't have the fun on their bikes that we do. Both my sons have sport bikes and if you catch em just right there is nothing to getting the hole shot. I guess some Valk riders don't know what their bikes will do in a short distance. And whether we can actually see their expression, we all know the look. " "

Kool-aid, Kool-aid tastes great! Considering all the completely uncalled for catcalls, insults, & put downs administered by a large portion of the owners of the "All American, iconic legendary brand" bikes towards all other bike brand owners that we encounter everyday, I don't think a little ribbing amongst ourselves directed at said owners on a Valkyrie board is out of line at all. There, how's that for a loooong sentence?!?! Get over it. Sheesh!

Both my sons have sport bikes and if you catch em just right there is nothing to getting the hole shot. I guess some Valk riders don't know what their bikes will do in a short distance. The first week that I owned my VALK, I was on my way to work when a guy on a Hyabusa stopped at a red light beside me. He revved his engine and looked at me. I smiled and waited for the light to turn green. When the light turned green we both took off. He got the jump on me but when I slapped second it was as if he'd hit reverse. When we came to a stop at the next light he wouldn't even look at me. There is absolutely no way that a VALK can outrun a hyabusa in the 1/4 mi or maybe even in an 1/8 mi. But, in a short red light to red light juant it can be done. The sportbikes have more horsepower but not that much more torque. And they have to reach double the RPM's to reach their max torque. And in a SHORT juant torque means more that horsepower.

Hello All, I'm new. I have a similar story. I pulled up on a HD at a Red light. He was in the far left of the lane so I pulled into the right side. He casually glanced my way then quickly looked back forward as i obviously didn't have a HD. My Valk is heavily modified and Murphy's law was on my side that time. He couldn't hear his bike, but he could feel mine through the ground. It was an awfully long light. He finally looked over at me and said, "nice Bike". I pleasently returned the compliment. The light turned green and we cruised away. Now, I'm a bike mechanic and I can tell you for sure that HD's pay the most for service and they definately pay the most for the initial cost. I swear by Honda's myself, love the quick starts after a year of storage. I also believe that your Bike is your Bike, ride what you wish, but don't make fun of the "Jap Scrap" that's been assembled in Ohio since 1980 and I won't have you remove that big chrome air cleaner with the "Live Free or Die" slogan on it and read out loud the tiny black letters spelling "Taiwan"

Our story this past weekend. We went out with a group of 4 bikes. All Harley's and us on the Valk Interstate. This is just a few people we ride with often. There is always a little good nature ribbing for Rachel and I, for riding the Valk. All in good fun... 1 couple got sick from something ate last night. So we told them good by, and 2 bikes headed home. That left just 1 new couple to our group and Us. I figured we still had about 350 miles in the planed route. Se we went on. After the second stop the woman passenger told Rachel how comfortable her seat looked on the Valk. (V Ultimate). Then she said that must keep all the vibration away from her. I almost rolled on the ground...LOL Rachel just calmly told her that the Valk did not vibrate..... You could tell her husband didn't want any part of the conversation... Then on the very next stop after a few miles of nice hills and twisties combined. I waited for them to catch up, several times, then drove off and left them getting smaller in the mirror again. The wife was asking what size the engine was in the Valk. I told her it was a 1520CC. Then she wanted to know how much the bike weighed. I said around 900lbs Then she turned to her husband and asked the best question of all. Honey, how come that bike walks away from us while we ride? It was all I could do not to Laugh.... He told her that is because it has six cylinders. I just let him explain it to her, and left it at that. They were a nice couple and I hope to ride with them again soon. I will still wait at the end of the twisties for those Harley bagger guys...

I often tell the "Jap Scrap"/ Ohio/ HD air cleaner/ Taiwan thing. When I started all the HD's had wingnuts on those air cleaner covers, now they all have allen screws. I'm thinking I may have something to do with that. Regardless I keep the correct size alan wrench in my sissy bag just for such an occasion.

They way I heard it... women LIKE the vibrations...
I was in Sturgis in 2004. I was one of 2 valks, 4 or 5 HD's and a Boss Hoss in our group. We had a GREAT sherpa there. He knew where everything was. Well, we went thru Custer STate Park, and he took us on a 15 mile washboard dirt road to find the Bison. It was REALLY wash-boardy. We got to the Bison and stopped... and I mentioned to everyone that my wife, who was on the back, told me that NOW she UNDERSTANDS why women like the HD's. of couse she had never said that, I got slapped, the HD guys really thought it was a compliment for about 3 seconds, and overall the whole group busted a gut.
