Long story shortened:

Started her up last night, turned on the petcock, after about a mile total loss of power, felt like she  suddenly ran out of gas (almost full tank). Tried opening the gas cap, switching petcock to reserve. nadda.
got her home, started checking things out.
Tries to start, spins freely, a pop or two but will not start.
pulled plugs, all dry, look almost new.
checked out vacuum line to petcock, ok.
Pulled fuel line off of petcock, pulled vacuum on petcock, no fuel came out.

So at this point I am leaning toward a fouled petcock. I rebuilt it a couple of years ago.

Any other suggestions?

Rebuild it again with a new vacuum hose and fuel filter.

Did the vacuum you pulled on the petcock leak down?

Anyway, bad petcock diaphram, clogged "cover set" vacuum port (don't just ream it out, replace it...there's a dampaner orifice in there) or clogged fuel screen.

Nope, no leak down. Redeye vacuum hose held it well.

Thanks

I've had the same thing happen to my tourer, twice.

Ran out there couple 'o miles, sputtered and died. Had to get
towed home.

All six carbs had fuel in them, checked with the drain.
The next morning bike ran fine, I didn't do anything.

Never did find out what happened. Interested to hear
what you find.

Might just be a bad petcock followed by a weak battery. My bike used to act like it was running out of fuel after it sat all week. Since I did away with the vacuum part of the petcock, it runs like new.  ???

All indications so far point to a failed petcock.
Although she tried to, she did not start again even the next day.
Thankfully the petcock falled closed instead of open.
I try to remember to turn it off when I park but sometimes I forget.
So, I ordered in a new petcock, an electric fuel shutoff,
a replacement petcock vacuum line, quick disconnect kit,
and various other bits and parts. I will piecemeal something together.
My next weekend I will hopefully eleminate other possible causes.
I will post my findings and what I concocted here.

Well, finally got all the parts in and time to work on her.
On removal of the petcock, I took it apart and found the little piston dealie-ma-bob had come loose from the diaphragm. I had rebuilt this petcock about eighteen months ago and have no idea why it just came apart like that. I pushed everything back together and it bench tested ok. None the less, it was replaced by a completely new petcock. I will pick up a cover set and put it in the old one and keep it for a spare or trading fodder.
