Just Riding The Many Storms Of Life

Ft.Worth, Texas

« on: June 11, 2011, 03:54:02 PM »

My wife is putting more patches on my vests and asked me a question I'm not sure about.  Does the American flag go on with the stars to the left or the right?  My stepson is in the Army and she has one of his shirts here.  His flag has the stars on the right, and he told her it was to show America going forward.  As a Patriot Rider, does my flag go on with the stars on the left or right??

This came off of a flag etiquette page on the internet
Display flag with canton on the right (canton is the blue field with the 50 start).  Display canton facing right when displayed on a casket, when displayed as a decal on the right side of a vehicle (bus, truck, plane, etc.) When worn as a patch on the right arm (but use on left arm is preferable).

Walt, there is alot of discussion with some patriotic people on this. i will try to explain to the best of my ability. If you are sewing your patches on your vest the proper way is to put the American flag on the left side with the stars on left and the stripes flying right. Ok now most everyone puts the state flag on the right and thats ok, but proper etiquette would be to put the state flag underneath the American flag depicting the union flag superior. On your bike if you are flying both flags the flags would be just the opposite. American on the right.
Your son in the Army..The Army puts union flag on the right sleeve with the stars on the right to resemble it flowing in the wind as your walking.
hope that helps, Ride Safe, Matt

Walt, I agree with Matt.  As a CMA member that is our handbook etiquette as well.

Most patch flags have the star on the left side.  If this patch is sewn onto the sleeve it would be sewn on your left sleeve.  The logic I was told is the field of stars goes closest to your heart.  The other thing I was told is that the flag should never have anything above it.  I did not find anything specific about it but I hope this helps.
