I've been working part time stints for the past several years. The full time job market in my area is not completely dead so I have been on numerous job interviews over the past several years.  Usually, I make sure my hair is neat by heading to the barber and trim my beard back short.  Today I'm going to an important interview and I am doing neither.

The difference is that today I am interviewing with the school where I have taught part time for the past several years. I figure that by now they know what I look like, how I dress, and who I am. I didn't want to deviate from the norm and look like I am trying too hard. Instead, I am going to  look like me. My hair is neat even if it is longer than my Paw Paw would have liked. I was hoping it would be long enough for a pony tail again but it isn't quite. I did trim my beard on the sides but left it long in the front, which just made it look longer. It's almost long enough to braid but I did not think that was quite the look I wanted today, although I may braid it later to annoy my wife.

I wish I could have ridden the Valk today. Unfortunately it has a bum valve stem that I have yet to fix. That is a project for later in the week. The parts are in but I haven't had a moment to work on it. I will. Otherwise, I would have ridden into the office today.

I'm currently sitting in my office trying to figure out how to be talkative and ask questions during the interview. It is hard to ask questions when I have worked here longer than one of the people on the hiring committee.

Good luck on the interview, I know the position you're in re. longevity. I had the same thing confronting me a number of years ago, I had more time in the dept. than two of the three board members combined. I also knew they were looking at another guy with much less time on the job, but would demand much less pay. Guess who got it??  When I was informed in person, I warned them this guy had too many skeletons in his closet and I feared they would regret their decision. I had known this other guy from prior experience and he was a walking headache. Within 15 months, he was being accused of sexual harassment and eventually sued by four women under him...as were the dept. heads. I just smiled inwardly and let them stew in their own juices. When offered the position a couple months later, I declined. All three board members were later demoted and I got one of their positions. This time I smiled outwardly.

When I was a student worker at the university, trying to get on full time with the computer
center, I was told by one fellow who interviewed me: Dress for the job you want, not for
the job you have.

It worked for me, it will work for you too  cooldude

Thanks for the well wishes.
I have always liked the advice "dress for the job you want, not the job you have." Oddly, in this case the job I was want is also the job that I have been doing. Hopefully my name being on the door of the office will count for something. They are making the temporary job full time. I have the most time, experience, education, and my name is on the door. We'll have to wait and see how it pans out.
When I left I found the chair's words heartening. Hopefully I will know something by the end of the week.

I'm at the wait and see stage. I guess the interview went well but I can never really tell. At this point I feel like the inmate in Shawshank that just goes into the parole board and tells them off. I could be worse people that Morgan Freidman.

well, for better or worse I went in and was myself.
HR called today to inform me that the search committee has suggested me for the second interview with the VP. That should be a rubber stamp interview. I should be in. I guess I'll find out next Thursday.

I applied five times for the job I currently have now, and I have five rejection letters to prove it.  I then applied at a “temp” agency for a position and didn’t know the employer, when they told me it was the company I tried several times to get in with before, my attitude was “ah screw it! I won’t get the job!” so I went to the interview with a pair of jeans and a polo shirt and a devil may care attitude.  That was at 10:00am, by 1 o’clock they offered me the job and asked if I could start Monday!!  That was three years ago now, still enjoy the job, (just hate the long hours!).  seems like the harder you try, is only the harder you make it for yourself!!

So, to recap, I was applying to be hired to do the job I was already doing. I enjoyed the first interview. I felt beat up by the second interview. It felt like more of a rubber hose than a rubber stamp. The wait and see stage lasted longer than I expected that it should. Since this was limited to internal candidates it was supposed to be a faster moving process.

After the second week of not hearing, I stopped waiting by the phone and started waiting by the mail box. My confidence dropped and it was ruining my mood. I've been in a funk lately, due in part to being anxious and unsettled.

Tuesday, a woman from HR called. They could not locate one of my references. He has left the school we worked at together. She wanted to know if I could provide another contact for him. I did. I also sent another person to use as a reference as a back up. The fact that they were checking my references was a good sign.

Then a little more waiting.

Today my supervisor confirmed I was getting the job in a hallway. He also told me that both of the interviewers in the second interview recommended me without hesitation. That made me feel better about the second interview.

Today I called to check to see if the HR woman needed more info. She did not return my call. A little more waiting.

Instead, another woman called from HR and asked that I return her call. On the phone she ran down the pertinent details and offered me the position. She'll put together an official letter for me to sign now that I've accepted the job.

I'll drop by next week and sign the letter, but this is a done deal.

So?  You're getting a job as a hall monitor?

Congratulations, John.
