I hate to beat this dead horse. I just need some pricing rough estimates. My buddy Ron who was in the motorcycle accident that I posted about back in February is back home and tried to start his other Valkyrie. This bike has been sitting since January, petcock in the "on" position. The bike made a hell of a clanking noise and did start. Pulled the starter and it's fine, broken tooth or teeth must be inside the case.
He can't work on this and is still healing from his accident. I remember seeing someone posted rough estimates of what the stealer would charge you and what parts would cost for a do it your selfer.
Does anybody know these  rough price estimates?

Don't know what the steeler will charge but I just finished repairing one yesterday and I have about $500 in parts with a new rear case, dowels, gaskets, gear, bearings, tools, etc.

Took a couple of hours to get the motor out, a couple of hours to get the rear case off after making some tools, about 5 hours to clean and rebuild the carbs and install a Pingle, a couple of hours to put everything back together, about 8 hours to put the motor back in, install the exhaust, starter, hookup the alternator, radiator, oil and coolant, and then synchronize the carbs.

Thanks for your response cooldude
I thought by the number of hydrolock posters there would be some more input for comparison Roll Eyes
He's hellbent on going to the dealer uglystupid2 My guess is he will wind up spending 2-3 times that. I'll re-visit this, when the job is done with his final outcome and cost.

Hope the stealer remembers to fix the CAUSE (Petcock & Carbs) and not just fix the resulting problem.

I bought the bike from a friend and he had it at the dealer and it was going to cost him too much to have the dealer do the work versus the value of the bike.  I knew I could fix it and would have fixed it for him, but I could not guarantee any time frame as my day job kills me sometimes.

So I bought it from him for $2500 and my son and I fixed it and now my son will use this one.  A 1998 tourer with 52K on it.

Mine hydrolocked.  I needed several new gears and a new rear case.  The dealer wanted about $2200 to fix it.  I did it myself with a buddy and spent about $900, but since I had it apart I replaced almost every O-ring and gasket.  I had to replace the rear case also because it broke.  We also cleaned all the carbs.  Number 4 seemed to be the culprit with a stuck float.

I have not followed ALL of these threads.
Does the starter motor shear teeth off of the ring gear?  Or is the damage more to the drive gears?

Here is what the one I fixed looked like:

Three teeth on the small gear sheared off

The part of the case that holds the shaft for the small gear snapped.

Everything else was fine.
