I am interested in changing the gear ratio for my 98 Valk tourer.
The reason being to increase MPG and lower the cruising rpm at 80 mph.
The bike has excellent torque from a standing start and we always feel like it needs another gear when we reach 65/70 mph in 5th.
I am sure someone someplace might have tried that already.
By the way- still the best bike ever made- Better than my brand new 09 hd rd king.

4 or 5 years ago an Italian named Mario developed a 6-speed gear box for the Valk. Apparently it wasn't "all that". Check BigBF's web site http://www.bigbf.com/bigbf_shop/transmission/ . He installed one and then removed it in fairly short order. I don't recall his dislikes, but seemed somewhat unhappy with it.

6 speed, hell, I want one.

Just kidding.  I read the reviews on several sites and even though it was basically just a replacement for the 4th and 5th gears, BigBF and others found it to have problems shifting into 4th and bogging the engine when you tried to lay on the throttle.

Thanks, Sgt and dfragen,  that is a start- an extra gear would not be an option for me, seems silly,
but to change a front gear 1 tooth or a rear 2-3 teeth would make very little difference in perfomance. The big problem for me is thinking outside of countershaft sprokets and rear sprokets. The wings I have ridden seem to  be geared a bit higher than the Valk. but not sure. they were 1800 anyways.
I had read about some members getting poor fuel econmy on their Valks-
I maybe have a story that would interest mpg watchers. : I was on a ride with an old racing buddy heading to a big flat trk race 2 yrs ago. We had a real big side wind- partially a head wind- he liked to ride fast and we were doing 100 mph. I went on reserve and ran out of reserve in about 6 miles before we could get off to fuel. He went and got me a water bottle full of gas and I limped into the station and filled. we took off again (at about 100mph)and in 69 miles I went on reserve again- fueled up and figured the mpg at 14.9 mpg. On the return- no wind and I got about 24 mpg at about 100 mph.

I bought my Valk knowing it was not going to be a Suzuki Burgman or other scooter.

That being said...your gas mileage sucks!

the only option is putting the trans gears from a '97 GL1500 goldwing or later. According to Fred Rau in motorcycle consumer news june 05 article. GL1500 3rd 1.272, 4th .964, 5th .758.
Valkyries 3rd 1.291, 4th 1.00, 5th .805. 1st and 2nd are the same.

early than '97 will not work, the GW shafts are smaller.

One option would be to go "darkside" and install a 65 profile tire. For that matter any larger diameter tire will give you more of what you want.  Specifications are published by the individual tire manufacturers so it's easy to find a larger tire and you may already be riding on a small tire unbeknown to you.  Metzlers are one from that group of "smaller" tires.

I thought that the gears in a Valk were straight cut and the gears in the Goldwing were helical cut. I believe that's why Mario developed his gearset. The only reason I didn't get the gears when they were available was the $995.00 pricetag and the necessity of having to split the engine case to install them. I know BigBF was not happy with their performance but some were.

Sure you can change ratios...All it takes is money... You can find a machine shop which will make new ring and pinion (if that's what they are called on the Valk) to whatever ratio you'd like. Bring lots of cash.

As far as I know, no one has ever made a sixth gear setup for a valk. Mario made new forth and fifth gears, with fifth gear being over drive.
