Can somebody from Texas tell me how long you have to switch to a TX plate and register the vehicle when you move there from another state?
Also, how long to switch your driver's license?
Thanks!

Iirc, all the states are pretty standard about that. It's usually 30 days.

Thirty days. If you get caught after the thirty days, just lie. Usually you aren't bothered unless you do somethin wrong or it is an inordinate time frame and you are noticed.

My reason for inquiring... I'm in SC and fully familiar with our laws. Never been to TX and probably never will. My daughter's boyfriend is moving away to TX... That's a good thing! He asked me what the law I'd for getting registered, etc and I said I would find out. Rather than do the research myself and looking at TX laws online I took the old fashioned way and thought I might get it easier by asking some of you guys who live there and have dealt with it.

Just be careful when you go to the DPS/DMV. I thought that I was engaged in idle chit chat when I registered my car and changed my licence in Texas. The clerk was asking me questions about things and I was answering her questions. One of the questions was something like "how long after you moved into your new house before you were able to get the landscaping fixed to your liking?" The answer I gave was over 30 days and there was an additional fee or penalty added to both the registration and licence fee.

Ouch! I wonder if they teach them that little trick in DPS school? I guess the first caution light should come on when you feel like a DPS employee is acting friendly and engaging you in a chat! Nah, I shouldn't say that. The last time I had to go in a DPS office I was way surprised at how friendly and efficient everybody was. Really!.. No, seriously!

That's great, if he has a place in Mich. too... Maybe the Tax & Reg is cheaper. If he gets pulled, brought his bike to the Winter Home here in Tx. .

We moved to Texas five years ago. Thirty days after we moved in, we got a comical cartoon in the mail from the state reminding us of the need to get the registration on all of our vehicles transferred within 30 days of arrival. It was humorous, typical of Texas, but clearly indicated they were aware of our relocation... We changed the registration several days later with no questions asked.

I travel a lot for work and have a texas license. Once in california I got stopped for of all things speeding on my Valk and they wrote me a ticket for aimproperly registered MC. My license was from Texas, Insurance from texas, but MC registered in California. I bought it in California, left the state and changed everything over to Texas except MC. Got sent to Sualkin Islands (Russia) for six weeks and when I returned I was riding with the intent to change the registration over to Texas.
But, what I had done what change the address of the Valk on the California registration to my Texas address. Went in front of the Judge in Lancaster and they recinded the ticket. The look on the State troopers face was priceless. Judge said "He properly notified the State of his change of address". Recinded the speeding ticket also.
Military runs into this all the time. Home of Record (Residency) one state, Domicile in another. It's called the 2 state rule.
Now everything is registered in Texas. OBTW, license comes from DPS and registration comes from the county you live in. Can renew both on-line. Love the State of Texas.
