My 98 tourer has six exhausts. They sound awesome. Is that their only function,or do they give the bike more power than stock exhausts?

I bought a manual.Looks like you have to take the front timing cover off to adjust the valves.I havent looked yet to see how often, but being a boxer engine it looks simple enough.Am I wrong?

I plan on changing the oil every 5,000 miles.I will follow the tables in the book for service intervals.Since my bike is a 98 what about not too often serviced areas like steering head bearings, swingarm bushings, etc.Do they often need replacing? My bike only has 26,000 miles on it.

I have seen some valkyries that have what looks like injector stacks instead of the chrome carb covers like mine does. Why?

I just got the bike, have lots to learn.I know nothing internal is likely to need repair, thankfully because the motors are way too complex to work on.But routine maintainance is what i dont mind doing.

I'm almost positive your pipes are Cobras.  Sound and appearance are their functions.  All I've read suggest the Cobras cause a power loss unless the carburetors are re-jetted.

Valve adjustment is not hard.  The maintenance schedule says Inspect every 12,000 miles.  Most will say you can stretch that out considerably.  Like 2, 3, or 4 times.  You may find one or two slightly out of adjustment, but they are probably fine.

Oil, Oil Filter, and Oil Change Interval are very personal decisions.  Do a search on the Tech Board and you'll see.  As a starting point for perspective on oil and oil change interval, the maintenance schedule says every 8,000 miles on non-synthetic oil.  Your other bits are probably fine, too, but if you'll come to a Wrench Party there are lots of folks who will climb all over it and offer their opinion.  In the meantime, go to the Tech Board and Search.

The "velocity stacks" look great, but are non-functional.  You will see some that have had LEDs put in them.

That's why we have Wrench Parties.

What Disco said, plus...

My opinion is that most people change their oil too often.  You can easily go 10k with a quality synthetic oil.  My interval has always been once a year or 10k miles, whichever comes first, using Mobile 1 15-50 synthetic.

The real potential for trouble lies in the rear drive line, but this is primarily due to poor maintenance by DIYers and dealers alike.  It is imperative that the rear end be serviced at every tire change or around 10k miles and this service needs to include cleaning and lubing the pinion cup and drive shaft connection.  The pinion joint is often ignored and the result is at best noisy and disconcerting and at worst leaves you stranded.

Add a periodic vacuum check of your gas petcock to your maintenance schedule and plan on rebuilding it occassionally.

There are Valks with 300k miles on them.  200k is not rare and 100k is common.  A little bit of attention literally goes a long way.

Come to a wrench party and we'll work her over.

What both Disco and Valkpilot said.  It would be in your best interest to come to a wrench party.  I can't begin to explain what can be learned.   I feel these guys knows more about the Valkyrie than Honda does.  They know their stuff, they're good.   I've been to 3 parties so far, and have had a lot of questions answered.  Also, I have had some mods done to mine with the help of everyone and have saved a lot of money on maintenance.  I agree also with Valkpilot on the oil changes.  I had a '91 Nissan pickup with extended cab, 5 speed, AC and nothing else.  I changed my oil every 10,000 miles and put over 367,000 hard working miles on that truck without ever cracking open the motor.  But opinions vary.  The tech board will give you a direction to go and do research.  Be safe and God bless

Oil change suggestions are put out by oil companys and dealers alike to sell more oil and more oil changes. With todays quality oils and engine technology oil changes are not that big a deal. Granted in extreme conditions oil changes should be more frequent. One extreme condition is a lot of short drives that don't heat the engine enough to burn off moisture and  caustic gasses that contaminate oil. I have a 98 Honda Accord with 210k on it with oil changed every 10k. The engine runs perfect and never have to add oil.

You don't have to take the whole cover off, just the round access cover in the center.  Hoser
