Non-Valk question (Honda Rancher 350ES)

Regarding a Honda Rancher 350ES.  It has a digital instrument pod and in that pod is a gear indicator.  The 2nd gear numeral quit working.  Mechanically it is fine, all works and also all the other gear numerals work; 1,3,4,5....just no 2, in its place is now just a dash mark instead of the 2.
Does anyone have a clue how to fix this?
I spoke with a very experienced Honda tech yesterday and he had no suggestions for me and said that he had never seen or heard of this problem.

on the display.  Have seen it before on other displays.  Probably the only way to cure it is with a new display.
Just think of the dash as the new 2.

if it's only got one display window and it is in the same spot for all gears it could be the control board or device that sends signals to the display.

My guess is that it is the device that sends the signal, but I have no idea where this device is located.  Hopefully it is not inside the tranny.
This is more of an annoyance than anything else, the ATV runs fine, I just would like to fix this if it not a major hassle or expensive.

I had a rancher 450 and had a display problem.  Trust me, it's neither easy or cheap to fix anything that goes wrong with that display panel......  +1 on just pretending the dash is a 2....

That is about the kind of news that I expected......I have a good imagination, that - is beginning to look just like a 2 !!!   
I have always had just the plain-Jane kind of ATV's, but I quickly learned a lesson on this one with the electric shift;  ALWAYS shift it into neutral before turning off the key.....because if the battery happens to be dead when it is time to re-start it, you can't shift into neutral with a dead battery....and...it has to be in neutral to start--even with the recoil starter!
Thankfully, my lesson was learned in the driveway and not 15 miles away from camp out in the desert or mountains.
