 ??? ???
Seems to always happen to me.  I start out with a simple little thing I am going to do and invariably I am there twice as long as expected.

Today it was replacing my front pegs.  Had replaced one about a year ago when the rubber mount and chrome cover fell off.  VRCC member sent me one for free.  cooldude  The other side has stripped threads for one of the chrome cover bolts on the bottom and the bolt had fallen out. Pegs had been scraped up a bit so I bought a good set from VRCC classified for great price, thanks again.

So all that needs to be done is take out cotter pin remove and replace.  20 minutes??  Well, on the right side it sits under the cover for rear brake mechanism and pin holding on peg will not come off without taking off chrome cover,  and removing rear master cylinder assembly so there is room to get the pin out of the peg.

Much easier on left, comes right off.  Putting the new ones on is pretty simple, set the peg in the bracket with the return spring, slide in the pin and cotter pin.  Well, getting that pin back in took 3 times as long as it should have.  It kept getting caught on the spring that moved around a bit when peg inserted in bracket so I am screwing around a while on both sides before I get it all lined up to slide pin in.

FINALLY, simple task completed.  Washed bike and my 20 minute task was completed in about 90 minutes.    Grin Grin Oh well, now I have nice new solid pegs and will have to take them out to see if I can scrape them up a little.

I know I am not the only one this happens to but maybe you anticipate the delays better than me.  uglystupid2

Home repair, car repair, bike repair...  I've learned never, ever, start a job when the hardware stores will be closing in less than an hour  uglystupid2

As a professional mechanic and electrician (they pay me for it) I can tell you that is how it typically goes.

Back when I was a contractor, we had a saying, when someone asked how long it would take - we'd say "However long it should take, multiply by two, and add a half...you should be close". So, your 20 minutes becoming 90, not TOO far off...could have shaved 40 minutes off....

I've personally found that when you start to rush it is when things go wrong and you start adding time onto the end.

Me? Because of the nature of what I do I take my sweet time. I tell em; "do you want it done right or do you want it done fast?" because if I screw up and drill a hole wrong then you're talking about the potential for hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage and untold extra time repairing it. I will not be THAT guy that put an airplane on the ground for six weeks because he rushed and destroyed the only part in inventory (like one guy I know).

I'm usually looking for the firkin wrench I just had and now can't find.

Oh that, pees me off, and it is always the last place ya look.  LOL

Mom's garden hose had a bubble that broke and leaked.

Figured a 15 minute fix.  Well that was yesterday morning, still not fixed.  I was informed this morning she had to water her plants and garden tomorrow morning, and the hose better be damn well be fixed.

Guess I'll run up to Home Depot or Lowe's this morning and buy a new 50' hose.    Yup, problem solved.

I'll put the old hose up till I got plenty of time to put a replacement threaded end on it.

Different topic.:

Several years ago, we had a hose do the same thing, we lived in California then, and I was a CHP.    The hose sprung a leak, I went to work and stopped at a Hardware store on my rounds, picked up a replacement end.    Came home, cut the hose off, pushed the new piece in and clamped her down.   Hey presto, I did a 10 minute job in 10 minutes.     Next morning, I was informed I put a male end on it instead of a female end.    DUH....  She has never let me live that one down.

I feel your pain.  The other day, I was going to lubricate the throttle cables.  Should be a simple procedure, right?  Wrong!  I needed to loosen the handlebars and shift them to the left in order to get enough slack to remove the throttle assembly.  I decided to punt it for a later date.  I have run across the same type of issues for other bikes as well.  Generally though, the Valk is an easy bike to work on.

Oh yeah, I also had her name tattooed on her forehead, didn't want to call her by a wrong name again.    Skillets hurt when swung by a pessed off REDHEAD.

What else ya want to say about it, I'll find a dumb assed answer somehow.

I was in Yosemite Park this week and in the museum they have a 1912 Indian motorcycle, the first one to visit the park, on display.  The owner of the motorcycle took it apart and put it in boxes when we went to fight in World War I so that his mother would not sell it while he was gone.  He put it back together in the 50's before donating it to the park.  I have a few projects like that but I am trying to take longer than he did.     Smiley
