Just last week I replaced my old 12 inch HD 440's (which I had purchased new) with a new set of 12.5 HD 440's.  Although I only had 50k on the old ones they seemed like they were still in good condition (no leaks and plenty of resistance) I had grown tired of how the bike was riding though.  And this after replacing my front end components (bushings, springs, fork oil, and steering head bearings). Well the new shocks seem to have made big.....big difference, she's unbelievably smooth now...I sure wouldn't think it possible that just that small a difference in shock length would have that big of an impact? Sure can't figure it out though.  Any thoughts?

It's possible that even though your old shocks had plenty of resistance their ability to handle rebound was gone.  In addition, the bushings may have been shot.

Putting longer shocks on also slightly changes the geometry of the bike.  All the little things add up to some change in ride/handling.

That's an expensive experiment.

The 440's have a Life Time Warranty.

I have had mine rebuilt twice. They test the springs and replace them if necessary too. My only expense was one-way shipping both times. And if you overnight 'em Progressive covers the return overnight shipping too.

Ferget about it though if you don't have your original receipt. It won't happen.

I read mostly good things about Progressive. I have their 440HD and I can't dial out the rib bruising jolts I get when the road becomes a little ruff.

I had them same issue, but these have resolved the matter. FYI, I only have these dialed up a turn and quarter.  Dialed them up two full turns and then dialed them down as progressive recommends.
