Side stand spring bolt broke
Chrisj CMA:
I think I know why that bolt will eventually break. The metal plate with the hole in it designed to secure that bolt allowes it to bend back and forth just a little, but over time you all know what bending metal back and forth does. yep! crack!
When mine broke, I made a new one from a hardend bolt from ACE hardward and built it up with spacers, then ground down the fat part until it was a tight fit into that hole. Now it cannot bend back and forth at all.......been on there for years.
That is a clamp/holder for the fuel tank vent line. Yours is either just not in the holder (common) or its been removed, not a huge deal, but it is possible to over fill the tank and have gas pour out the vent and all over the bike if that hose isint there...........Ive never heard of it happening, just saying its possible
sheets:
Do you know what bent the bolt ?
... running over something that kicks up beneath the scoot and hits the lowest part of the machine.
... running over a high curb and the lowest part of the machine drags when going over it.
... loading in a trailer or pickup with too steep of ramp so bike bottoms out on the lowest point.
... with bike on a lift, and with sidestand in lowered position, don't have the lift arm touching the stretched spring, adding additional side load to the already tensioned spring/bolt.
my guess... Yrmv,

Yes Yes. I should have waited for your replies. I called my local Harley/Honda shop Z&M and they had the #6 bolt that I thought it was on stock. Drove over there and he brings it out....nope that's not it. So he looks through the fiche and sure enough it's # 10 on the frame diagram. Thanks sheets for the correction. I was just to fast on the trigger. So he doesn't have it on stock so we ordered it.
If I really need to ride this weekend I'll go the hardware store route and rig something up. If not I'll just wait till it comes in. Chris- I'll have to look for that stray vent hose.

To keep riding When that happened to me I just got a bungee and bent one hook around the sidestand pokey outey piece and hooked the other to a saddlebag mount. Worked so well I left it for a year. :-[

I'll have to take a peek at that bolt. Thanks for the pics. Intermittently my kickstand has not fully retracted. It stops half way in its swing. I nudge it with my boot, then the kickstand retracts fully. I thought that I might have bent the spring after bumping it with the arm of the lift jack, but perhaps the problem is the bolt.
