I ask this on the tech board but thought I'd get the real scoop from the TX boys.  Will 4 1/2 inch handlebar risers added to my 99 std require any modifications to the cables?  TIA for your input. L

Disco??  You out there buddy?  He has the biggest risers I've seen.  But, he did replace the brake lines with SS ones.  I don't know about the throttle cables.

You may need to re-route cables.  I don't think you will need to replace any.

I have the LaMonsters -- 1.25" back and .25" up -- and did not have to re-route or replace anything.

Before the LeMonsters I had the GenMar risers which are basically 1" riser inserts.  Didn't have to modify anything for them either.

what brand of risers are they? If they are the HD duce risers I would go with the interstate throttle housing. The throttle cables come out of the bottom of the housing instead of the top like the tour and standard. That gives you more length ( about an inch ) to play with when re routing your cables. You also get the new started switch with the housing so you can have a spare one if ever needed.

I have the 4.5"ers on mine Doc and I had to do a minor re-route of the cables, nothing difficult.

OK, I'm back.  Had to do some hot weather acclimating today.  Some of it riding.   cooldude   Lots of it mowing.   uglystupid2   Some of it actually watching fireworks.   coolsmiley

Hey Doc, I need some clarification.  When you say "Will 4 1/2 inch handlebar risers added to my 99 std", do you mean 4.5" extensions to the risers already there or are you talking about replacing the existing risers with ones 4.5" tall?  If you're adding that much add'l height, I'm sure you'll need new cables all the way around.  If you're replacing the existing with 4.5" risers, I defer to f-stop, Houdini, and the tech board. 

You're right, Hay, the risers are 6" or 6.5", but I had to do something to make up for the pullback I lost when I switched to sweep-minimizing VTX1800C bars.  No cable issues in my particular setup.  The Galfer lines are their direct Valkyrie replacement lines.  (They will make custom lengths to order if you use the spec sheet they will provide you.)  I still need another inch of pullback and I think there's enough slack. 

Good tip about the IS throttle housing, Russell.  How are you doing?

And, if they are HD or HD-style risers, you do not have to drill the top bridge to get the SAE threads through the metric hole.  Baron Custom Accessories has an adapter bolt with SAE on one end and metric on the other.  http://www.baronscustom.com/catalog/display/1182/index.html

Also, if they are HD or HD-style risers, a single top clamp designed for them will not work on the Valkyrie.  I believe the Valkyrie riser bolt spacing is 100mm, or roughly 4".  I believe the HD spacing is 3.5".

I installed the ebay (chinese) 5.5 inch risers to replace stock ones.   I had bought the metric / english bolt adaptors elswhere  because I did not want to drill out my triple tree for the english bolts to fit. (The adaptor bolts cost me $18.)   I did have to reroute the throttle cables, by removing the throttle assembly, and i routed the whole thing back behind the tree instead of in front of it. (kinda a pain job as I ended up unbolting the headlight to thread it all through.) The brake hoses "just make it" on my 99 tourer.  I had to undo the clamps that keep cables and hoses neat, to allow the hose to "make the diagonal" and thus be long enough.   A future project will put on SS braided lines and I believe I will be getting them an extra inch or two longer.   It is amazing what an extra inch or two does to the feel of the bike.   I felt like I was "running out of arm" on sharp slow speed manuevers, and the risers seem to help out in those situations.   PS dont forget to put a thick towell or carpet on the tank for the project, otherwise you will drop your bars on the tank and not be a happy camper. 2funny

Drilling the triple tree for the Duce riser is not that hard at all. Also if you have the Duce risers you will have to cut the little ring on the bottom of them off, make sure that the cut is nice and stright. I would also make sure you cover your tank with some good padding WHENEVER you are taking your handle bars off or moving them. It can be tricky to hold them with one hand and work with the other even if you think you are that good....lol



Disco Dave, Doing great! been messing around with the bike a little since I last saw you. It is putting 107.5 HP  to the back tire now and 105 ft lb tq @ 4500 rpm. I have a C/T mounted on my extra wheel and as soon as it cools off a little going to install it. It is the same one you have on yours. Gear Jammer sent me a link on one for sale on flea bay.
