THe Blue and Gray Ride really woke me up to the Civil War.

Watched the Battle of Gettysburg last night and the South lost again.

I work with a ole boy from Chicago, and for the life of me I don't know how thy could have won.

I tell him that fairly often.

He gets a kick out of it.

Because he always says all that matters is his side won.

Even though the place I am from in East Tennessee was really rather Pro-Union anyway, hardly anyone around here owned slaves

None of my ancestors did as far as I know.

1. Industrial base
2. Population
3. A leadership cadre that understood war was no longer a bunch of un-coordinated skirmishes to gain glory. It was the first "modern" war.

The one who wins is the one who can kill people and break things faster than the other guy.  Gettysburg was the souths "March to the sea" that fell apart.

Just got back from a week at Gettysburg. It was awesome..!!! I guess what surprised me most was how very well documented everything is there.  I can't believe we lost that one.  I love American history and gettysburg should on everyone's MUST see list. The 150th Anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg is in 2 years and I will be there again for a week......

My wife and I were there a few years back for the recreation.  It was a blast.  We were staying at the hotel across from where the officers were camped at the museum.  It was really neat to see so many people in period costume, especially when the temp was 105.  Being from Canada it was pretty cool to see the recreations and to walk down the street and get the crap scared out of us when the guy in the window above us shot his rifle.  He was recreating a confederate sniper that shot from there.  I think he was confederate.

Had a guy tell me once, "Y'all don't behave much like a conquered people."

I was wiring up a new air-conditioner in his house.

I've never been much of a north/south person. I'm a Texan, and that trumps all (yeah, we're arrogant too).

"What the heck does that mean?"

"The Civil War. We [the north] won, but you people [Texans I assume] don't behave like a conquered people."

I scratched my head a bit, savored the irony that he had moved here for a job that paid a living wage, pictured the current decimation of the northern industrial cities and said, "Y'all still think we lost?"

I spent the night at Gettysburgh Battlefield once in 1989. Your not supposed to because they dont want pinhead vandals and such. I found that out later. I started by the visitor center and wound up by Big Round top. I didnt see any ghosts or anything, but I couldnt wait for the sun to come up.
A few years later I got to go again. Absolutely a must see. There was so much lead in the air they have bullets that collided in mid air and fused together. Buy a local  a beer nd listen to folks who grew up there. They still find stuff there.

I spent all day Wednesday @ Gettysburg.  Hired a personal tour guide for 3 hours from the museum and that's the way to go!  He drove us around in our car, stopped where we wanted, went into as much detail as we wanted.  Best $80 I've spent in a long while.   cooldude

If only Billy Oats and his 15th and 42nd Alabama Regiments had turned the Union left on the second day. That blasted Chamberlain fella and his Mainiacs would not get out of the way...

We trudge on (still embracing the lost cause).

I did the same thing in June.  An absolute "MUST SEE" if you are interested in History at all.  The National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, PA. is also pretty cool.

The other place I think EVERY American should try to see in their lifetime is Washington, D.C.  Sooooo much to see and so much history.  You can spend a week there and not come close to seeing everything.  Some of the places you can go to (like Arlington National Cemetary) gives you goose-bumps, just like Gettysburg.
