The Twilight Zone

« on: July 08, 2011, 09:44:46 AM »

I have looked at Pyle, Shark, and JVC. I have Cobras w/o baffles and want to be able to hear them at hwy speeds. I don't know whether to go with amplified speakers or a seperate amp. I want to use my phone as a radio and gps. A bud got metal chrome speakers that look great from MT but they sound a little tinny. Any help will be appreciated cause sound is hard to hear on a webpage! Grin

Here is the what I'm looking at now. Anyone own one?

Check with BIGCOUNTRY.  He has some killer speakers mounted on the handle bars.

I dont see how handle bar speakers can give a good sound.  Im open to the idea but there does not seem to be any way a base note can be heard or produced.  I would be grateful to know if there are speakers that give a true sound including a nice base.

I agree.
To even begin to experience any bass response you'd have to start with at least a 5.25" quality speaker. And, that is certainly too big for the bars. Then there's a housing for 'em.

I have a set of Polk Audio Momo Marine speakers 5.25 mounted in my fairing x 200 watts total. They crank quite well with reasonably decent bass, but then I'm not running non-baffled Cobra's either.

I've run them with the noise of the Ragnor Cut OEM's and fared pretty well against that noise. I'm back to OEM less piggies only and am very happy all around. + with the tunes passing through the CB headset I have a stereophonic [does that word still exist?] effect.

Prior to, I had a pair of J&M Chrome speakers on the bars. They did well, but very little bass response. Those are now on Joanne' VStar and with tunes passing through her J&M CB headset she gets a good balance without having to overload the volume.

You are right about the bass part . A buddy has what I posted and the metal chrome speakers look good but hardly no bass and a tinny sound- but loud. That why all my speaker  for my PA system, bass amp are in a big box. Like these kids with the boom boxes take up the whole back section of their vehicle and can hear and feel it a mile away! 2funny

Yes a fairing makes all the difference but I don't have one. I am not crazy about tunes on a bike, but would like to have it if I wanted. More importantly for my gps and don't want earbuds. Wink

You can get good bass from small diameter speakers, but you need to get creative with ducting (how Bose does it with the wave systems) or through deep excursion of the cone. So far no one's really made anything satisfactory for bikes. Even in my Jeep with the soft top on vs. the hard top a lot of bass is lost and I have 2x10" subs.

On my previous motorcycle I had the Shark 250 watt stereo system. With the speakers behind the the fairing it was pretty good. For the $$$$ it is definitely worthwhile. I only paid like 105 bucks. The speakers are chromed plastic, but like I said for the $$$ it was pretty good. coolsmiley

I use these here. I've had them for 4 years now and they're great. I have no problem hearing them at 70 mph.

+ 1   :cooldude:on the Uniq Cycles speakers

I've had 'em on my standard for a few years, very good sound at 70 mph.

I got the one with a 150 watt power amp as well, very good product. IMHO

I have that system, but with the blaupunkt speakers, which they don't appear to list any more.  For the price, I'm more than satisfied.  And they were great to work with.  I had originally ordered the larger 5.5" speakers, but they were just too big.  So they exchanged them for me without hassle and refunded me the difference.  As with any motorcycle sound system, with all of the wind noise and all, the sound quality suffers at higher speeds.  I find mine is pretty good at highway speeds when I'm not surrounded by other traffic.  But get around other cars, and the wind and road noise kills the sound.  And being only 4" speakers, you can only turn them up so loud.  I don't really think there's any way around that.  Otherwise, they are great up to about 45-50mph.
