Any idea what fork seal replacement ought to cost at the local stealership, errrrrr........dealership?
Or is it gonna vary too much depending on location, dealership, etc to say?

I've heard a lot of varying answers to that question... when I first got my bike, I had to do a lot of work on it... I had so much other stuff to do, and didn't have the special tool, and just took my forks to the dealer with a set of progressive springs and also I supplied the oil. They charged me $300 to drop in the new springs and didn't even change the seals... I had to do it over a few months later when the seals started leaking... -Mike "borrowed the special tool from some nice VRCC person..."

It's been a few years, but, the dealer here charged 100.00 to install new progressives for me, plus parts for the new seals and wipers. I took just the fork legs in to them.

I pulled the fork tubes off the bike took them to the dealer with new progressive springs. Two days later they called said they were done, springs installed and new seals, My cost was $250. Planet Honda in Concordville Pa. Never again.

I just had mine done Tues past on my 01 IS - the morning I was leaving for TN. Fueled up, check the bike and found the wet fork! Rode it down to Heritage Honda in Maysville KY. They already had a full shop, but when we explained that the four of us were heading out for a trip down south they squeezed me in. $250 out the door. Excellent and very knowledgeable staff gets from me! Only dissapointment was they didn't have a set of Progressives for it. They even gave me thier 2012 Wing to go for lunch while I waited. I do most of my own work, but IF I need a dealer for something, I will be going back to them.

Unless you are going to change out the springs, you don't need the "special tool." I changed mine out myself a couple of weeks ago and it was easy.
My local shop quoted me $150/side to do mine. I decided to give it a try myself.
There is a four part youtube video, "changing fork seals on a VTX 1800" that I used as a guide.

Maybe not the "Honda special tool" but maybe a homemade "special tool" ? My local shop quoted me $150/side to do mine. Almost the same here, 1-1/2 hrs labor @ $75 per hour = $225 for both. And that's bringing the bike in. There is a four part youtube video, "changing fork seals on a VTX 1800" that I used as a guide. Very good information on these.

VERY good local independent bike repair shop charged me $200 total to do mine recently... Having seen the work required to do that, that was money well spent IMHO...

[/quote] This is the $49 tool that you don't need if you are just changing the seals. Yes, you still need a seal packer tool that you can make for less than a dollar with a PVC coupling.

If I recall correctly, my local repair shop quoted $180 for labor and parts and taking the bike to the shop. That didn't include new springs.

That job is just too easy not to do it yourself. I put it off for a year afraid of what I was going to get into. Halfway through the job I realized there is nothing to it, especially if it is a Tourer or Std. I took the fairing off my I/S because it just made things easier.
