I bought a used GXM 30 XM antenna/receiver to hook up to my ZUMO 550 GPS on my Interstate. I also have another mount I use on my 97 std for the 550.
Just plugged it in this AM, and all I can get is "No XM Antenna" on the IS.
I then plugged it into the 97 std. mount, and it "sees" the antenna. So, I figure the mount is the problem, so I switch the 97 std. mount to the IS, and the IS mount to the std.
Now, the IS still says no antenna, and the 97 sees it. What is going on? How can it tell what bike is what?
One difference I have, and not sure why, is how the GPS powers up.
They are both hooked to the battery direct. However, if you put the GPS in the IS mount, you need to push the ON button. On the 97, the GPS powers up right away. Never been sure why they power up different, when both are hooked direct to the battery.
Thanks.

I have looked at those antennas before. Bought a cheap one from China and it was actually an external antenna for the GPS portion of he 550. I gave it to a coworker who needed it. The connector looks like a small USB "L" type? Hmmm. If you have to press the power button, the GPS is running on its internal battery and will not play mp3's, sat. radio, voice directions, ect, If you turn the key on, does it recognize the antenna? Hay Jimmyt No, it does not. That is what I thought too. However, I even tried it with the bike sitting there running, and it would still not recognize the antenna/receiver. However, it does on the 97, no matter which cradle it is in. So, I do not think contacts are it. It is bike specific. MP

If both mounts put the GXM to close to either behind the fairing or under the wind screen it can, as mine did, block the signal and the GXM showed 'no antenna'. At least that's what I experienced. I made a custom mount for both the GPS & GXM ant. to the reservoir clamp which moved it out and away. Now all is fine. At the time I wondered if I was getting any interference from the fairings electronics. I'm still not sure on that one.

Yeah, but I did not have the GXM mounted, it was just sitting on the fuel tank in both cases, so there should be no interference.

It seems to act like it is not getting power from the bike, ie have to turn on the switch. Yet, I can ride for days with it on, and it never needs charging?

I got it to recognize the antenna. I did have it wired to my switched fuse block, so it only got power with the switch on. I do not understand why it would not come on when the bike was running? The xm.
Now, still have a problem. It just says "Acquiring channel lineup". I have left it out in the yard, with the antenna on the seat, for hours, and that is all that happens. Why does it not come up with the Preview channel? I also need to get the ID number from the Preview channel, as it is off the antenna itself.

I had the same antenna with my garmin 2820. Was riding one day it said antenna not connected. Cut it off and back on run good for a few days and message again antenna not connected and then it said this is not supported. Had Garmin link up to my unit and couldn't solve the software problem. It was out of warranty. Still use the 2820 without XM and no way to up-date it also. This was my 3rd unit. I had returned the other two. Hope it's not your software like mine. It worked so well when it did work. I no longer have any XM on my bikes. Had trouble with my latest unit so the heck with XM. I now have AM/FM with my Ipod and all is well. David
