I retorqued my steering head bearings at 120,000 miles. Original bearings still in there.

Me and Earl from Pensacola made a special tool to do that, but it didnt fit when we got in there, so we just guessed at the tightness.....tapped the nut around with a screwdriver and a hammer....all is well as far as drivability now so I guess my answer is yes it can be done

I'm ashamed.   I had to replace my head bearings at 9,000 due to a boo-boo on my part.   Smacked a curb at about 10 MPH with a loaded trailer on the back.   Never went over, but we sure dimpled the races.

MGM currently has 242K+ and I haven't touched them since.

It has no play in it and still passes the weight test, so why screw with it and screw something up?     I say if it isn't broke, keep your dang fingers off of it.    These are rock solid bikes that are to be ridden and not messed with, with one exception, the rear splines need service religiously about every 9 to 10K.
