After exiting the interstate coming to work this morning, as I made a left onto the cross street the bike slipped out from under me and spun across the road. I hit the back of my helmet hard on the road but was otherwise unhurt. When I stood up, I slipped and fell before I could get to the bike and I realized that oil or gas was spread across a large area. By now traffic had stopped, and I was able to get my footing and get the bike up. It took me a few seconds to remember how to reset the bank angle sensor, and then I was back on my way.
This whole thing probably took no more than a minute. The chrome engine guard and saddlebag rail guards are scratched but the bike is basically undamaged. I have a big scuff on the back of my helmet and a headache, but fine also.
This minor incident would have been a big deal for me if I had not had a helmet on. I hit the back of my head really, really hard. I am 6'3" and 235lbs, and the back of my head was the first thing that touched down. I might have survived, but I am sure that I would have been unconcious at best. I have been through this intersection 5 times a week for over 30 years, and have been riding longer than that. I have occasionally ridden without a helmet, but I will never ride without one again!

That headache might mean concussion... but it doesn't sound like you were confused
afterwards... glad your bike is OK and take care of yourself...

Glad you're ok and if you hit the helmet that hard you should probably replace it as it's integrity is now compromised and will not offer the same protection for future mishaps. |

Glad you're ok! I'm with you on the helmet thing. I once hit a small patch of oil coming around a corner at night, went down quicker than snot, cracked my helmet, thankfully not my head. It's not a question of if you're going to take a dive...it's when?

Maybe he meant that it took him a minute to remember to turn the key off and stand the bike upright again before trying to start it. Garland, glad to see you ok, but if you have a headache see a dr. Could be concussion even with helmet. |

+1 How does one reset the bank angle sensor? Glad your ok Like they said above, turn the key off then back on. Garland, glad you're ok and your Valk isn't too bad. You should go ahead and get checked out by a Doc. Head injuries are nothing to discount and your headache may be indicating one. Have you decided on your new helmet? Could be concussion even with helmet. I am sure I am alright-headache went away after a few aspirins this morning and I feel fine now. As far as the bank sensor goes, I tried to start the bike after I got it up and of course it would not fire. Then I thought I had hit the kill switch when I went down, flipped that back and forth, still no go. Then I remembered the bank angle sensor, turned the key off and back on. Sounds easy enough, but with a headache, being pissed about going down, and listening to twenty cars honking at me simple tasks became challenging. I appreciate all the good wishes, but I mainly wanted to remind just everyone that bad things can happen at any moment to any of us. I think the engine guards and saddlebags guards on the bike worked perfectly to prevent any real damage to the motorcycle. My helmet and Aerostich pants saved any real damage to me. That stuff only works if you wear it, though. |

Did anybody actually stop and ask if you were okay? If I go down and people start honking at me then they're probably gonna get the crap kicked out of them. Or at least a boot in their driver side door. Glad to hear the headache's gone. Concussions SUCK. |

I went down once in Louisiana and some turd started honking at me.
Stood up, walked back to his car, stuck my head in the window and said, tell ya what partner, I'll honk your horn for ya if you'll pick up my bike for me.
He jumped right out and said come on, I'll help ya. I tapped his horn twice and most of the ones hanging around all laughed and clapped.
Most of the spectators I don't think they knew what to do exactly. Ended up 4 of us stood the bike up. It was my old Harley, had all my luggage (Marine Corps seabag) on it and headed for Tallahassee for TAD. Dat be Temporary Additional Duty.
Naw, I didn't hit anything, I think I just went to sleep. I was running from San Francisco, CA on very little sleep. Just Chocolate candy bars and pop.

Glad you and the bike are OK. +1 on the helmet. Everybody that I know that went down, hit their helmet hard enough to beat it up. With a bare head, probably a different outcome.

glad you are ok.. it would be wise to get checked out.
I took a spill a year or so ago turning into my office parking lot. Across the street is a kaolin processing plant (chalk).. and the road usually stays powdered with the stuff.. ON that day there was a heavy fog which turned it into a slurry... think milk of magnesia .. BAM !! 2 broken ribs.

Manoman.......I wear a helmet everywhere. They are hot in the summer in the Houston area but still better than a busted head. I took a really bad fall at 60 mph in 99 on a BMW K bike......got pretty busted up but my very scarred helmet saved my head......although my wife sometimes disagrees.....and it was winter so my leathers saved my skin, just a few broken bones and a split liver that healed on it's own....no operation. Point is.....wear that helmet.....you bones will eventually heal, but you bust that head and you got major lifetime problems.

Glad youre OK. Time to re-helmet. Put it on the shelf and remember it fondly.
It will never save you again. Get checked if you hit that hard.
You might end up slurring your "S's" at a later date anyway.

What helmet were you wearing?
I had on a Scorpion Exo-100 half helmet. Hit square on the back left side. The whole thing happened so fast it has made me reconsider my helmet selection. I have a Shark Evoline 2 modular that has much more protection, but I generally only wear it in cold or rainy weather. If I had gone face first it would have really come in handy, though. Most of the last ten years I used a novelty helmet, and of course they work great as long as you don't need any protection whatsoever. The Scorpion is the first "real" helmet that is so comfortable I don't mind wearing it any more than the novelty helmets, but it is just a half helmet. I am most likely going to try to make the Shark my everyday helmet now. |

Guess what,,,,,,, cooking oil spilled in the parking lot.
Vry embaressing and it hurt.
You need a new helmet now that it has done it's job.,
They are only good for one lick.
Put it on the mantle as a reminder what saved your head from being dead.
