Dear DragonRiders,
500 miles ago I got a nail in my rear tire. I work as a sales associate in an auto repair / parts store. We repair about 30 tires a week so I had no problem with one of my techs patching the tire from the inside. No problems there. But over the past three days I have noticed a squeak (sounds like plastic scraping on something to me). It is absolutely coming from the right rear of the bike. When we removed the tire, we did not remove the final drive or drive shaft. I did clean and relub with moly everything we could see. All the splines were in excellent condition. I did not loosen those four little nuts on the final drive when I reinstalled the tire. Is this where I made my mistake ? Any input would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance,

you dont have to remove the final if you just did it but always loosin the four bolts ....  after axle nut is tight . tighten the four hub bolts again .

Might want to remove the rear wheel and re install it looking for improper installation. Especially the protective collar.
Although I would have thought a bad install would have shown up before 500 miles.
Are you sure that the squeak is from the repair?

Does it make noice when you spin it in the air? If it does take the pads out and spin it to see if it still squeeks. Mine did that turning right. It was dirt in the pads.

Nope, haven't had it on a lift yet, will try that tommorrow, ran out of time tonight. I assume the protective collar you're talking about is that black plastic ring about an inch wide that runs around the final drive ? I will also loosen the axle nut, loosen the four bolts, tighten the axle nut then tighten the four bolts. I will also take a look at the rear brake pads and caliper. Ain't sure the noise came from repairing the tire but it seems most likely haven't touched anything else since the repair. Keep going, guys, any help is most appreciated !

You HAVE to loosen the final drive nuts before you torque the nut on the axle so the splines on the wheel flange and in the final drive can align themselves. THEN you torque the final drive nuts. Marty

I would check rear bearing , if rear axle nut is to tight it MAY take out a weakened bearing. Just a thought.

Use a water pistol and spray the brake all around the area and ride to see if the squeak is gone.
Do the same on the other side.
Water will do no harm and will eliminate anything like a noise you described.
Ten minutes and everything will be dry.

Very interested in this. I have the same thing going on. When I get home from a ride and am pushing it around in the garage I have a creaking noise from the rear somewhere. Just a few hundred miles ago did the double row mod with the nilos ring. I tightened the four bolts last. I only changed the left bearing so it could be the right one I guess. Seemed smooth when I checked it tho. Will have to get it back in the air and see if it makes noise then. Thought it might be the nilos ring where it meets the outer bearing race but it seems too loud for that.

OK, it wasn't the brakes or the collar. Got it up in the air and spun the back wheel. Noise was definately coming from the final drive. Loosened the axle nut. Noise gone. Loosend the four bolts on the final drive. Noise still gone. Tightened the axle nut. Noise still gone. Tighteded the four bolts on the final drive. Still no noise. Took her out for a spin. Problem solved ! Thanks to everyone for your advice and input. Much appreciated !

OK, I hate it when people say they tightend the four bolts LAST. THe important thing is they get tightened right after torquing the axle. If you wait till "LAST" then anything you do that can change your alignment is not good, like mounting shocks

Bottom line here is that any time you loosen the axle nut, the four nuts on the final drive MUST be loosened, then tightened after everything else is back together, even if you don't do anything to the final drive.

Close Duke but no cigar. Like ChrisJ said, you tighten the axle nut then the final drive nuts. leave everything else alone till you have those done. Marty

Understand........for most people we know what you meant, but we have a lot of newbies, and this is the tech board, so technically speaking if someone took "last" as LAST then we would be telling them how to mess up their bike (possibly) Just trying to keep it straight
