Nothing beats a 6-pack!

Oxford, Indiana

« on: July 15, 2011, 08:47:22 AM »

Friday, July 15, 11:30 am EST:

Just got off the phone with MP. He's on the way to the VOAi get-together in N. Carolina. He's stranded in Dubuque, Ia. Seems his sidecar has the optional brakes, and the way they do this, is by tapping off the banjo fitting on the rear bike brake, with two banjo housings, and a double banjo bolt. The fitting broke off the hose going to the sidecar, so he has NO rear brakes. The local Honda shop doesn't have a stock banjo bolt, so he's trying to find one, to get him on his way. The HDL fiche shows it as a 10 X 22 oil bolt.

I told him to try any of the foreign car places, to try to match one up. Everyone at the auto shops, has references to standard, not metric.

Anyone nearby happen to have one laying around? Or, does anyone have any idea WHERE to look for one, other that the dealer? Any ideas, AT ALL?

MP said he has just about every part to rebuild his motor, with him, but who'd ever think they'd need a banjo bolt?

Any help/ideas/suggestions, more info, etc, would be GREATLY appreciated!

You can reach me at seven 6 five, three 63- thirty four, 10, and I'll get the info to him.

It's number 30, below:

HDL Microfiche page

If I were closer, I'd pull mine off to get him on his way, I need to drain/replace my brake fluid, anyway!!   Roll Eyes Shocked Wink 2funny

Thanks!

Roger

Can you match it up at Ace hdw?  They have a huge section of metric bolts.   Sad  Worse case,  Ride her in with the front brake?  I'd try it, knowing MP, he probly has spare pads.  Hoser

Yeah, bet he does! I just got off with him again, he's on the road, using the front. I'm looking hard around here, for anything, because we are supposed to meet up tonight in Indiana, or tomorrow. If worse comes to worse, I WILL pull mine down, to get him on the road, and worry about getting one. I know the front will do, as long as you don't NEED to have the back. But if you DO need the back, that's a disaster waiting to happen.

I'll give Ace a try, but don't know if they have banjo bolts, specifically.

Thanks,

Clamp off your rear brake line and pull your banjo bolt.  Head on down to your local Napa auto parts or other large auto parts store and have them check their assortment to match it up.  With all the metric cars on the road they would have to have one that would work.

I believe I have one that I can overnight to him at home.  I swapped to SS lines and they gave me new banjos and I THINK I kept the old ones.  I may go hime at lunch time to see if I have them so I can for sure make the UPS overnight delivery.

Find out where he will be tomorrow night just in case I find them.

Thanks,

Weld the hole shut on the side car banjo fitting or find a spacer like it so he can use the bolt already in there ?

I have a few bolts left over from installing SS lines also could over night them.. T.P.

I'm 240 miles away at work, so I wouldn't be able to leave soon, it's raining cows and horses between us right now. so he might not want to head this way ?

Thanks to all!!! I think we have it covered. MP's going to limp down here in the morning (Lafayette), and I got a hold of my Honda parts guy, that races, and he says he has a whole bin of the bolts, as "back-ups". Failing that, I'll take one off mine, since I don't have any plans for going anywhere but work.

thanks again, it's great how a community comes together!

If need be , the mechanic I use is about 1/2 hr northwest of Peoria IL. Let me know if you need the number. He is
a Valk owner and understands them well. He does not have a large parts dept but you never know.

Like I said on the phone, I have my spare banjo bolt in my pocket and it is MP's if he needs it by overnight delivery.  For that matter, I will send it to YOU, so you won't be without while waiting on the return part.  I have the SS lines and no longer need it at all.

If you give him yours, I will just use the US Mail to send it to you, since there isn't as much rush involved.

Your decision, I'll pay the postage either way.

Ride Safe...

Thanks again, all!!

I have a lot of messages. I'll try to get back to everyone, but will be a bit later. I'm expecting MP to call tonight, to see how he's doing, and I'll know in the morning, how we fare. We'll have him on the road, safely, no matter what, and then we'll go from there.

What a group!

Okey, dokey - the day started out well, with breakfast at the I-Hop, skip and jump. Then off to Action Motorsports, and Shae, who had a banjo bolt. THEN, off to the Post Office, where I work, so we'd have access to my "work tools". Took the saddlebag off, and pulled the banjo bolt. Yeah, buddy, the one from Shae was the wrong one. Drats!

So, off to Ace Hardware, where we picked up a bunch of nylon o-rings. Stacked 4 of them together, replacing the banjo fitting that had come apart, and bolted it all back together. Voila, success! Bled the brake, and MP and Charlene headed down the road.

Originally, he was meeting up with me, to give...yup, GIVE...me a set of Interstate exhaust tips. [sarcasm font] So I got to meet some new friends, free coffee, tinker on a Valkyrie, which I LOVE to do, and all I got out of it was some measly ol' Interstate tips!! MAN, DID I MAKE OUT LIKE A BANDIT!!!! [/sarcasm font] Charlene promised she'd make sure he messages me, to let me know he made it through the day, okay.

Thanks again, MP - already have them shined up, and when Sebastian wakes up, I'll go over to the shop, and put them on! It was great meeting you and Charlene, and looking forward to the next meeting.

Thanks to ALL, who offered all kinds of help and suggestions, and Roadkill in particular, for putting the "spacer" bug in our ear. We could have made a one-piece if we ended up at my shop, since I have a lathe, etc, but I feel very confident that our stacked washers will work, until he can get the right hose.

Oh yeah, and my 3 year old grandson, Sebastian, got to rid around the parking lot, in a sidecar! He talked about it 1/2 way home, just before sleep overtook him. In about 20 years, he'll be ready for my Valk....
