The link never said why the so called cop left his partner in the car for 4 hours. I would like to know why he left the dog in the car...
Although, I love my and most dogs, there simply isn't enough evidence presented for me to make a judgement call on this. Based on the posted story, all we know is the dog died of heat stroke.
I live about 10 miles from New Castle. Not a K-9 LEO, but an LEO none-the-less...
They are being pretty tight-lipped around here about exactly what happened. What has been reported is that he left the dog in the car while working an off-duty security detail for the county housing authority. He left the dog, I guess in a running car, with the A/C on. The temperature was in the 80's. At some point the A/C failed (don't know specifically why) and sometime over a 3 hour and 45 minute period the dog died of heatstroke.
I was told, but cannot confirm, that the car had a mechanism in it that if the temperature in the car went too high the windows are supposed to partially open and a fan is supposed to activate. It was not switched on (again, the last part I can't confirm).
That's what I know...
My opinion... simply, he should be held to an as high, or higher standard as compared to the general public. The punishment he got, was the administrative part of this matter, and it wasn't enough.
There is still a criminal investigation taking place by the County District Attorney's Office; who knows what will happen with that. They should have waited to find out if the DA was going to pursue criminal charges before taking administrative action. I would imagine catching a criminal charge in this matter would have caused a different attitude for the administrative proceedings.
But then again... what do I know?
