Seeing some comments in the past from riders in e.g.: Florida and such, complaining about it being "too hot to ride", I'd snort and huff. Year-round riding, no snow, and yer' complaining?
I take it all back. All the eye-rolls, snorts and scoffs. Winding down the road trip the last two days I learned that yes, Virginia...it CAN be too hot to ride. It was simply brutal. The very last day, ATGATT went out the window, so to speak. Rolled up and bungied the jackets. Made no difference.
Most memorable were the boiler moments sitting at various border crossing or road construction line-ups. Yikes...

DM, I ride with ATGATT even in our summers. I find the mesh jacket allows a breeze while protecting me from the sun. The full helmet is good to if I lift the face shield just a bit. Of course, you hafta keep moving and stay outta towns.

apology accepted.  and yes, keep up the atgatt. wet a long sleeve shirt and wear it under you vented jacket. it's actually cooler with a l/s shirt than a tank under the jacket, even after the shirt dries out. and with a helmet on, too. |

Yep, I'm in VA and and I have a double strike against me. I never had any tolerance for the heat and it seems the older I get, the more I look for cold weather. I know, that's the reverse of what older people normally do. So,,, with this weather, riding is completely out for me! No sense in trying to ride while I'm miserable. I'll just wait for the fall as I always do. |

Sometimes I think I need a support/supply vehicle following me on trips. We hit everything. Rain, thunderstorms, severe heat. The couple we rode with had a trailer and, naturally, a complete wardrobe. Cold? Pull out the leather. Rain? No problem; raingear. Heat? Replace leather with mesh. I tried to find middle ground what with storage space and a wife who just has to pick up stuff for kids, souvenirs etc., and whose wardrobe takes 75% of my available space. So, we had half-helmets, FirstGear touring jackets, boots. I just did a search here on goggles, wondering if there is such a thing as rain goggles. Rain killed my bare face and eyes. Sun made me look like a racoon with a black, diseased nose and white around the eyes (sunglasses). Going to look for mesh jackets AND going to plan the next trip better.  |

The Valk related part is I ride in the heat, and you can get acclimatized to it...but it is a process...combination of hydrating correctly, correct gear (less is *not* better, neither is too much), and practice... Heh...gotta tell ya (not quite Valk related) that the number one email I get on my Old Vic restoration site is that I should *not* put AC in the house, as "those 1900's builders knew what they were doing and it doesn't need it". Obviously from those up north somewhere...when it's 107 out and it hasn't been below 85 at night in days and days...it cannot be cool in a building that doesn't have some AC. Me? I'm putting in 10 tons. Maybe 12. |

I feel bad for people in places like Kansas where there's simply nowhere to hide from the heat. Out here we can either ride to higher climes or ride to the coast. In either place it's typically ten degrees cooler. Kansas? Iowa? You guys are screwed.

The Strom is setting in the garage. I wear a mesh jacket, full face, gloves, boots, kevlar jeans, ATTGAT all the way. Too hot for me to ride. Heat index was 111 day before yesterday.
At my age I can stand the heat better than the cold but not this!

A few weeks ago I would walk out to go to school. Temps would be in the low to mid 90s. Humidity was below 50%. We were talkin about how good it felt. I was riding to school 65 miles each way and hit a stop and rob for their 2 for $3 qt bottles of Powerade. Then storms started rollin in a couple of weeks ago and the humidity shot back up. Our temps are still in that range but it's muggy. Too miserable to ride. Can't wait for September to get here.

I'm going to go for a short ride this evening. Want to check the new front tire once more before leaving for Bellaire on Monday! It is hot but never too hot to ride, just as it is never too cold to ride. Just installed Baker Wings--hope theu help a little!

It's been hot. I'm riding to work before daylight in a short sleeved work uniform and a helmet. Ridin' home in a soaking wet work uniform with the helmet on the backrest. Compared to working in the heat, riding in it ain't so bad. But, sitting here in the air is pretty nice too.  |

Since last Saturday night, I put on a little over 1200 miles doing PGR stuff in Iowa. Lots of Welcome Homes and a Funeral.
Anyway, bike did great in the heat. One thing that I noticed was the roads.
They got real rough during the peak of the heat as they expanded. Smoothed out alot as the sun began to set and it cooled down. Lots of tar oozing between the seams.
Reports of roads "exploding" in the heat.
Was raining when I went to work this morning. After 1200 miles in 100 degree heat, I loved it. AAAaaaahhhhhh!

For many years I feed the wild birds in my scaped back yard, and keep several birdbaths for them too.
It was so hot this morning that a dozen birds were perched on a dry birdbath giving me dirty looks.
I have one old fuzzy robin who follows me around and jumps in the fresh cool water in each birdbath as soon as I clean and refill them.

Been pretty miserable the last couple of days here. 100+ mark... I rode in the evening just to get on it for a bit and wasn't so bad at 7 pm. In the heat of the day, I mowed my lawn cuz it's my only day off for a week. Working 60+ hours. Got doused by the water hose 3 times while mowing to cool me off. Just brutal. Took a pic of the thermometer on my back deck today. First pic here is in December 0f 2010, 7 months ago... second pic is yesterday.   Almost redlined it.    |

When I travel I use a 3/4 helmet with a plastic face shield. Keeps the rain from stinging the face and with a slightly tinted shield it helps cut down on glare and the "racoon" look. I also carry a shorty helmet to use when I get to my destination. But the 3/4 with a shield is what I've used for decades for facial protection...also cut down on windburn even though I have a fairing and windshield.

I actually said I took a pic of the thermometer... didn't say it was true. Massachusetts did not hit 115 real temp. The true reading for the day was actually 103 deg. F. at the Airport and then index. The visual was just for impact of how hot it is for all of us right now... I'm also pretty well aware of the temps down where you are ... lived in San Antonio for 10 years. Hope ya get cool enough down there to ride in comfort. Ride safe and often. |
