Paid for Doing Nothing: Suspended Office Assistant Kept Getting Checks for 12 Years

http://jobs.aol.com/article...%7Csec1_lnk2%7C80378

Talk about a cushy job! For the last 12 years, a Virginia woman hasn't set foot in her office and has done zero work, yet she's been collecting an annual salary that has totaled more than $300,000. Recently, the bookkeeping mistake was discovered and her payments were discontinued, but now she's filing for wrongful termination and unemployment benefits!

It all started more than a dozen years ago, when Jill McGlone, who had been working as an office assistant for the Norfolk Community Services Board, was suspended for "revealing confidential medical information." Apparently, authorities forgot to suspend her pay, however, and the checks, which totaled about $26,000 per year, kept going out, according to Washington, D.C., news site TBD.

Granted, $26,000 per year is not an exorbitant salary, but considering what she was and wasn't doing to earn it, it's a bit more than generous, really. There's no word on whether or not she received health insurance, but there were definitely retirement savings involved as well, and McGlone is upset that she's been unable to access them since she was terminated.

Her situation was only uncovered recently, when a new supervisor, Maureen Womack, came in to take the reigns of Norfolk CSB. She went over the budget, discovered the human resource department's mistake, and fired McGlone with alacrity.

But McGlone, silent for 12 years, has found her voice at last. TBD reports that, in a letter to the city manager of Norfolk, she wrote, "The denial of my unemployment benefits, the wrongful termination of my employment, and the refusal to allow me to draw down the money in my retirement are issues needed for discussion."

Then she claimed that she was discriminated against, although it's unclear how that is possible when no one even saw her, and most didn't even know she existed. She also claimed that her civil rights were violated, and you can't help but wonder where she gets her inalienable rights to sit at home on the couch while the rest of us go to work. Then there's also the claim that she and her family have "suffered greatly." Just think of all the inconvenience caused by the gravy train no longer stopping at her door.

It's surprising that there's a lawyer out there who would take her case or even advise her, but there's always the chance that she spent those years at home getting a law degree online, preparing for a day such as this.
************************

Well, she's got gall if nothing else! One has to ask themselves how this went un-discovered for so many years. I don't know the organization but the Norfolk Communtiy Services Board can't be all that big. It's not like their Exxon or Boeing. Someone had to know about this IMO. Somebody needs to go to jail, starting with Jill McGlone.

Not sure about Virginia but, in most states, the employer is entitled to recover every penny that was not earned. I know, it happend to me. Luckily, I wasn't aware the company had kept paying me because it went to a different account that I didn't use after I left that company. So, all the money was still available and for some reason, they wanted that money back. They got every penny. Thankfully, they were not entitled to interest in my case.

Oh and BTW, just in case anyone here is interested, I've already asked and it appears they will not be filling her position but, should they decide to do that, I'm first in line.  Cheesy

There may infact be a chance she could win.  Based on the article, she was only suspended 12 years ago and they forgot to stop her pay.  Suspension does not equal termination.  My lord, I sure hope she isn't entitled to un-employment now.

Whatever else, the woman is a liar and a thief. period
Excuses for the mistake don't make her honest. She knew what she was doing for all 12 years.
A lawyer taking her case? And why not, there are those who will argue anything for a buck. They give daily proof that there is minimal connection between what is right and what is legal.
You can twist, turn, and spin "legal"-but right is usually pretty clear. It's about being responsible for yourself and keeping your word.
She is a very good example of a serious problem in this country today-those who expect (and feel justified in the expectation) that they are entitled to something for nothing.

That is IT !!! Great freakin idea !  offer all of congress and the the whole whitehouse admin. a 12 year suspension !  it would be hellova lot cheaper for taxpayers than what they waste day to day now and they still get salaries and retirement. They dont do crap anyhow! If we pay them to go away, like they did for this lady, we can start over and maybe have a chance that this nation will survive thru' our lifetime !       cooldude

I bet she wins because of that. I think it would be hard to make a case that she wasn't working if she was suspended with pay, because she was doing what her employer told her to do. The person that owes the money is the one who left her on suspension for 12 years.

I disagree with paid suspensions for anyone. You don't see that in the private sector. If you get canned, and re instated, you do it on your own dime. If you win a case about the suspension being unjustified, then you get paid.

It's called fraud if she can't pay it back.  Seen this in the military, more officers in Leavenworth for travel/entitlement fraud then for anything else.

Maybe her suspension was groundless? You're often suspended pending an investigation. Does anyone actually know whether or not she did what she was accused of doing? Because if she didn't then good for her. Fukk em.
