We have been to china and have read many articles on the architects and engineers (structural). If they have a failure , they are held responsible. It insults the government and that is a no-no. I do not agree with all there policies, but some of them would cure a lot of shoddy work around here. da prez

If they knowingly ok'd shoddy work then they absolutely should face consequences.

This is one of my favorite fails in China the poles they built on were not made correctly and hollow to boot. This is what happens when you steal all the technology and you dont know how to apply it. So many of China's new creations have the real look but fail to perform. There are many failures that you dont hear about.

They now routinely compete against the Europeans for contracts. They didn't steal it from the US because we have no high speed rail technology to steal. The US has dragged its feet for years and is now well behind the curve. We don't possess the technology and will have to buy it from somebody. Just like the new Oakland Bay bridge was manufactured by the Chinese. Brought over by ship and bolted together by Americans. Don't underestimate the Chinese... within a decade they will be a strong competitor in the airline industry against Boeing and Airbus. And in many other industries.

Just like the new Oakland Bay bridge was manufactured by the Chinese. Brought over by ship and bolted together by Americans. Don't underestimate the Chinese... within a decade they will be a strong competitor in the airline industry against Boeing and Airbus. And in many other industries. That's not true. Though we haven't implemented it we've got the technology in spades for everything from high speed rail to mag-lev and have had it for years. That's the real shame of it; we can do it and do it better than them and yet, we don't. In fact, pretty recently the Chinese were touting their system for preventing exactly the type of accident that occurred. How that work out for them? And while they may eventually be a competitor to Boeing and Airbus it will not be through superior technology or quality. It will be through cost. They'll just do what their Russian forebears did and reverse engineer existing technology and then build it for a fraction of the cost due to the great wage gulf and loose quality control. But it remains to be seen just how competitive they can be. While buy-in on a Chinese made airliner might be considerably lower than for a Boeing product of equivalent range and capacity that is less important to carriers than operating and maintenance costs.Another five million up front can potentially save you ten times that over the 20 year lifespan of an airliner. If their poorly constructed aircraft have a high failure rate that sees a lot of AOG time (or worse) then their products will not be competitive at all, even if they give them away. I've seen Russian and Chinese aerospace products up close and personal and though I'm not a fan of either I'd fly in a Russian plane (even a Tu-134) before flying in a Chinese built or maintained aircraft. No, the threat from China is not from their ability to do anything better than anyone else. It's strictly through their ability to undercut competition. But in industries where long-term value is paramount the Chinese are not currently equipped to compete.

Gee, I wonder if they put so much space in between those buildings because they knew that just this kind of thing might happen? That's the thing about the Chinese; they just don't care. If it happens they'll just suppress the information and scapegoat a couple of drones who were probably just following the unofficial-official doctrine of the way things are done there.

Instead of giving the Chinese our technology we should send them OSHA & the EPA along with a batallion of trial lawyers to help 'em along. That oughta slow them up a bit!

Bad mouth the Chinese all you want but they are in a race to the top where with all the bickering in Washington with our economy in the crapper, I believe this country is in a race toward the bottom. India and China PHd graduations drawfs the US.. The US can't even get built a hispeed rail across the US where China are planning to hub out hispeed rail to Europe, Africa and SE Asia.
The top? I dunno. I'd say they're in a race to economic force majeure (not the legal term but rather the literal meaning). But I'm not sure that's the same thing.

Good one Eddie! Sadly though, it is 100% true. Instead of giving the Chinese our technology we should send them OSHA & the EPA along with a batallion of trial lawyers to help 'em along. That oughta slow them up a bit!

If you really want to curtail the Chinese and Europeans from implementing American adavanced technology (mag trains, supersonic commercial aircraft etc etc) all you have to do is get them to accept the American Legal system class action lawsuit processes and fines.
Up until 2-3 years ago aircraft manufacturers were accountable for ANY part failure in ANY aircraft they designed - including those built 50+ years ago.
Over 1/3 the cost of a household ladder is the liability insurance the manufacturer has to have in place due to customers placing ladders against power lines or using them for scaffolds etc.
Legal liability does have its place, but stupidity shoudl exempt you from recovering damages from being stupid.
(Just my humble opinion)

Huh?
Flooding the market with cheap crap, cheap labor and manipulation of currency value. That may eventually make you the largest economy in the world and I guess you could call that "on top" but there are different ways to look at the top.

They could really use these agencies. They have polluted huge swaths of their country with no concern for the effects upon the citizens. They have one of the worst safety records be it mines or manufacturing. I suppose you'd rather see the US like China when it comes to pollution and job safety?

I, for one, do not mind my tax dollars being spent on protecting me from inferior, dangerous products. Not that the last evil empire gives a crap about killing our babies or us, but at least there is a line of defense. Much as some people would love to dismantle it and 'live free'. Fill yer' (made in china) boots.
We've sold our souls to them. What we haven't sold, they steal. Now we can buy it back at the nearest Walmart, hoping whatever it is doesn't harm us and that it lasts more than a week.
My wife laughs at me because I refuse to wear, consume, plug in or otherwise rely on anything "Made in China". She's right - it's getting much harder to avoid.

Nope, just would like to see a more level playing field. BTW SE, maybe you could send in your 2011 tax payment next year figured at the old "pre Bush tax rates" to strengthen the EPA & OSHA. I know you want to be a good patriot, better than the rest of us.

I also try to avoid buying crap from China but it is almost impossible. Even the good tools that were once made in the USA or Canada are now made in China or some other "low quality producing country". I just bought some running shoes on the weekend and most were made in China, finally found a pair made in Cambodia and they are actually comfortable. Could not find any made in the US or Canada, even at $150/pair.
