Did John Wayne ever make a war movie where he was fighting Germans? All I can remember is him fighting Japanese, North Vietnamese, Indians, and other cowboys. Did I miss one?

He was in The Longest Day which was about D-Day. Didn't see it, but he probably fought Germans. In The Sea Chase he played a WWII German sea captain! Looks like he swings both ways!

John Wayne! The guy played the same character in every movie, terrible actor. He was also a racist and copped out of serving in the military during WWII because of his acting contract and yet, he's some kind of hero to so many people. I don't get it.
You want a hero from that era? Jimmy Stewart was the real deal. John Wayne was a paper tiger.

Anvil, here ya go: http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/dgagliasso/2010/02/28/john-wayne-world-war-ii-and-the-draft/There's dozens of other sources, either supporting this or not. I found this to be the most objective of the sources and I have no axe to grind either way. His patriotism never wavered, even though it cost him greatly in the 60's - 70's. Like him as an actor or not, he loved this country and its people, history and everything it stood for.

I don't know or care about why the Duke didn't serve in the war, but seems like I remember reading that several big-name actors were granted "immunity" from serving because the gov't felt they could perform a better service here by keeping morale up and giving Americans hope. Over there they would just be another guy carrying a rifle. Here they could inspire millions. Plus, think how dis-heartening it would be to see "John Wayne KIA" on the 6 oclock news.

Well that piece addresses his service (or lack thereof) and the "reasons" behind it. It doesn't address his racism. Read his Playboy interview from I think 1961? Take a look for yourself and you'll see that he really didn't love all that this country stood for. As far as his family/medical status preventing him from entering the war, that's BS. My grandfather had two legs that were of uneven length by an inch. He was originally rejected for service but put up a stink and was assigned to BB-40 as an anti-aircraft gunner. He also had a wife and a son. John Wayne could have served if he really wanted to, but de didn't really want to. Did he do some good as a morale booster? Sure. But I'll again refer you to Jimmy Stewart for the mettle of a real hero. John Wayne was an actor and not even a very good one. Nothing more. I don't hate John Wayne either. I think he was probably like most men of his day in his certain attitudes. But he's a conservative icon, as if he's a standard to live up to. He's no standard.

Anvil, You've posted over 600 times, in the last 100 post you've been a self proclaimed expert in the following fields: bluegrass PETA Federal Fiscal Finances Economics Second Amendment History of Slavery Sex Education Brake Design Tire Design Material Engineering Dragster Design Chinesse Culture American Industry Vmax Vrod Vlakyrie Border Security and now a John Wayne expert. With that said 18 post out of 100 is expert status, with 600 post that would make you an expert in 108 areas taking the average. Why are you wasteing your time on this forum when you could be running the universe?

part of the reason he didn't serve was his age, also is some of his comments from the pb article. http://www.flixster.com/actor/john-wayne/john-wayne-biographyI think I'm on a few avoid lists. :'(

John Wayne had enormous physical presence. In most of his movies, he was type cast as the leading man. He became a role model to many. Might even call him an American icon. Wonder how many young men wanted to become a Marine after watching The Sands of Iwo Jima? John Ford used him to create a whole list of great Westerns that are still popular today. Glad I don't read gossip tabloids cause I still love him.

I hate it when someone hijacks a thread to inject their opinion about something that has nothing to do with the original intent of the thread. Those people are called trolls, I believe.
Anyway, yes, the only movie I recall John Wayne battling Germans in was "The Longest Day". His character broke his ankle during a parachute jump and I can't remember if he actually shot at anyone during that film. Anyone?

Anyone remember our member Paris? occasionally he would have a guess what year this car is post and once I guessed right on one and he sent me an autographed poster of the Duke, It hangs proudly in my office. most of my clients are what I would call of dark complexions and never had anything but good things to say about the pic that is framed in my office. No one ever suggested he was a racist in all these years but I am not saying it is not what was in his heart, just not in his public image Also have a large pic of Cassius Clay standing over Sonny Liston in fight 2, a 3 stooges one of Dewey cheatem and howe lawyers and the Rockwell freedom of speech pic I have eclectic tastes The duke one always gets the most comments If you were awarded medal of honor the govmt took you around on war bond tours in WWII to raise money and lift morale. The fellows who lifted the flag on IWO also got shipped around to raise money Duke did much good Contrast that with a certain woman of low moral fiber who went to N Vietnam and took a pic on an anti aircraft position in enemy colors I will continue to like the Duke thank you for the Info Anvil Al, stay away from the sauce dude.....You are plenty funny enough normal whatever that is for you May need another imaginary conversation post soon the material keeps coming in
