I have had the newly painted tins on my bike for less then a week. Today is the second day I have ridden. When I go off the bike here at work, I noticed TWO spots where the paint had peeled off. Both spots are about the size of a dime. One on each side of the FRONT FENDER, in the sunken area where the front forks come down. This never happened on the stock paint, and there is NOTHING close enough to it to have rubbed it off. I was wondering if any flexing in the fender could have pulled it free??? It looks like it is down below the original paint. If the painter roughed up the original paint and shot the new color over it, then cleared coated it, could that have caused the chipping??? As I said, this never happened before the new paint was done.

Any thoughts would be appreciated, as I am going to see him tomorrow and I would like to have some information on my side when we discuss solutions.

Thanks,

Nico

I'd take it back to your painter.  He will know what step in the clean, primer, & paint process that he left out.  Good paint put on with the correct technique does not come off, even if the tin flexes a little...JTL   Angry

Paint delamination is most likely caused by lack of sanding in that area or some sort of contamination, ( grease, fingerprints,or maybe  wax not removed properly)

I FOUND THE PROBLEM !!!!

It is the "wingnut" that connects the handlebars to the seat - ME

Besides the newly painted tins, one of the other add-ons I installed were a set of fork lowers to stop wind buffeting. Well, when I went out to pick up a machinery part, I realized that they were coming DANGEROUSLY close to the fender on harder braking. I must have hit a hard bump or made a hard brake and the fork mounts for the air wings bottomed out and scraped off the paint - ARRRRGH!!!!!

I have a cobra light bar with aftermarket halogen turn signals mounted to the bottom of the light bar, so the air wings have about a 1" gap from the bottom of the windshield or they would hit the turn signals. Guess while trying to keep them from damaging things above them, I didn't consider what they might damage below. Needless to say, they are coming back off as soon as I get home. The worst part, is that they were FREE from my brother who took them off his Valk Standard before he sold it and gave them to me. THANKS A LOT PTGB!!!!!!!

I aready spoke to my painter and will be bringing the front fender back in for him to fix. I hope he offers a stupidity discount. And I called the wife and told her about the problem and that it was my fault. God Bless her, she didn't even bat an eye, just said "well, as long as it can get fixed...". That's why I love her, she knows that I am FAR from perfect and still loves me anyway...

And this from the guy whose faulty petcock, that HE GAVE ME for free, caused a fuel leak in my garage that can only be compared to say, maybe, just a tad better than the EXXON VALDEZ SPILL  tickedoff

I still cannot allow any open flames in my garage for the fear of a conflagration not seen since the great Chicago Fire of 1871  tickedoff

Given the dire circumstance of your girly paint chip, I present that a TRUE RIDER simply laughs upon riding through the worst deluge of gravel and slag, looks at the aftermath, throws their head back, and laughs the hardy laugh of the vikings and proclaims, "WHAT ELSE YOU GOT?!?!"  laugh

... And don't think I won't tell MOM that your picking on me!!!  Cry
