Surprise AZ.

« on: July 28, 2011, 06:52:13 AM »

Yesterday I was on my way out in the AM and had something new happen. I don't remember what gear I was in because I was so surprised but the Bike cut off for an instant. Just stopped running than started again. It backfired when it retsarted so I'm thinking electrical but I haven't touched anything for a long time.     What's getting ready to fail?

You might have instantaneously hit the kill switch on the handlebars!

My 03 (RIP) did that several times over a 2-3 week period. Never
did it again, and I never found out what it was. My 98 hasn't.

There was a thread about this years ago. I bought my 2000 I/S in 2002 with 10 K on it, and it's done it twice on the expressway in a couple of weeks, during 2003 (?). Hasn't happened since. Fyi, mine didn't backfire but it did definitely miss/cough.

it's a known phenomenon...has happened to a few members, but haven't heard many complaints for 4 or 5 years now.

those that reported it happening seem to not have the recurrance...probably ICM blip.

Check the battery cables/connections and the ground to the frame for good solid connections, but this is not uncommon.

Possibly the ignition switch:  Corroded switch contacts inside, at the ignition post only.   Heat buildup through poor contact can cause the ignition contacts to open up, then close again as it arcs over to a new contact point.    You can use an ohmmeter to measure resistance at each position of the switch (should be under 1/2 ohm).

I've owned two valks since 1999.  First one 120k on it now 60k on this one.   They both have the symptoms.  Couple or three times a year.  I think the reason we don't see it on the board anymore is everyone knows it can happen and just keep on truckin.

Do you remember if you hit a bump? Sometimes the spring doesn't pull my side stand all the way up and she hiccups on a speed bump, and I can hear the stand clank up when it hits the bump itself. It hasn't happened since I installed the jack adapter, so I may have changed the orientation of the side stand switch.

My 99 with 44k on it has done it twice since new. Both times I was hundreds of miles from home.

my 2000 IS never did it BUT my very early 97 did it several times when i put in an IS icm! She also doesn't like anything but the original icm! She hated the Dyna's. She's just a fussy lady. She wants what she wants

99 I/S and it has happened probably 5 times in 6 years over 22,000 miles on the stock ICM always at highway speed on a smooth road no big bumps.

NO I did NOT touch the kill switch!

Has not happened in the last month since I installed the DynaTek 3K ICM but then again not many miles yet.

Backfires are caused by crank with fuel and no spark. The next good spark sets off the big bang. Can be a fouled plug. I don't know the if the Valk ICM can drop in and out and then be good for a long time. It does sound electrical.

Both my 97 std, and my 01 IS have done it a couple or three times each.  No bump, etc.  Just going down the road, and missed a beat.  No backfire either.  Just resumes running a split second later.

I must be watching the news too much and not riding enough.

I thought the subject was Monetary Shutdown...

But now that I know what you are talking about I have had it happen a while back. It was a one time thing and it made me wonder if I'd hit the kill switch. But I was pretty sure I didn't. Felt electrical as opposed to fuel related. Very sudden.

Mine did it once.  Didn't backfire, just all of a sudden started running rough and losing power.  Thought if was going to die, but then it picked back up and ran fine and hasn't done it since.  That was in 2001.
