Check out this site, page down to the pictures.  It is a new site for me but probably not for others on this forum.  I have heard more than once that modifing the airbox was not a good idea.  What is the general concensus on this?

Intakes, like exhausts are designed for more than just maximum flow at high RPM's. There are other issues to address. With Exhaust systems it's scavenging at low to mid RPM ranges that sees a benefit from strategic use of bends and back-pressure but as a result top end power is sacrificed. You see this on race cars and race bikes all the time. Take NASCAR for instance; short course cars will have mufflers and bends where big oval cars do not, at least that's how it used to be. In today's restrictor plate era that may have changed.

Dragsters on the other hand are WFO from line to line and use as few bends and restrictions as possible. Intakes are similar. Airboxes (as opposed to pods or wide open bellmouths) use resonance to aid in generating all around performance. By opening the airbox like that you MAY increase top end power but you're going to do so at the expense of mid range and low end power, often significantly. A buddy of mine had a GSXR1100 that he took the airbox off of and went to pods. Several jet kits and dyno hours later he wound up putting the airbox back on. It was that bad. Personally I would rather keep the power where I use it most.

Before I did that, I would just remove the whole airbox system and clamp on 6 small high flow performance air cleaners directly to the carbs and see what she does.  Then when it really runs bad, I would put the unmolsted airbox back on

I tried my bike once with the airbox lid off.  It seemed okay cruising around.  Then I opened the throttle wide at about mid range rpm.  That just about killed the engine to a stall.  Needless to say, I put the lid back on  uglystupid2

But, he's got about 175 jets in his.  Maybe that combo would work.  Wonder what his mileage is now?

My airbox has the baffle out as per Factory Pro with the stage II jet kit and I really like it. I looked at all the articles that said dont do it but I wasn't happy with wide open throttle. So I put the kit in with the 110 mains and a 6 degree wheel and it pulls. Gas mileage actually improved because someone prior put in a kit with just needles and I could never really get it dialed in. I didn't try the 115 mains because It was good enough with the 110 but there is someone else that has 125 mains in. Honda did design the airbox right for the application with EPA restrictions but if you want a more full throttle go then do the mod with the jets.
