Over the winter I did a desmog and I used 14mm freeze plugs on the top side of the motor.

Last week sometime I blew out a 14mm freeze plug from the right front and today I blew out the left rear plug. Sad   Both times I was accelerating hard when they blew out, and both times the motor was fairly hot. I will admit that I drove the plugs down so that they would be just below the casting on the block. They could have been driven down further but I thought that that would just be a place for water to collect.

My solution to this was to insert a button head allen screw (5/16ths) into the hole and use an allen wrench to allow the screw to thread itself into the casting and then fill the rest of the hole with JB Weld.

Presto!!!  A permanent fix, that's cheap and no hassles with trying to locate those pesky freeze plugs. cooldude

That's kinda strange. ???
I did a desmog about 30K miles ago using the cup plugs & have had zero problems. I did drive the plugs down to where there was a good 3/8" between the top of the plug & the top of the hole. No JB weld & just dressed the hole up with some chrome 9/16" "finger grip" caps.
Oh well, as long as you JB'ed the holes you will be good to go!  cooldude

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

Noticed mine were loose till they got all the way down. I thought about water also but figured it would evap as the engine warmed up.

I did this a few years back and I never had a problem. This pic was originally just for show and replaced with SS plug. What I did is go to my local boat shop and bought 4 stainless steel ,if I recall correctly 3/8-16 short plugs. I tapped the tube end put a dot of sealer on the threads and tightened down and I was set.
