Ok, my first battery, OEM lasted 10+ years, no BS. I replaced it two years ago. This morning I planned on riding to work, bike started but shut down, and then would not start. So am I looking at replacing a two yo battery...what should I check to see if the alt has not sh1t the bed?

Start with a volt meter on the battery. Should be more than 12v.

Start the bike, jump the battery from a non running vehicle. Check the battery agian with the meter, should be higher (don't know what the aly should be, from 13.x-14.x volts.

Just because you did good with the 1st battery, doesn'y mean you will or wont get the same life from the 2nd one.

When you say it wouldn't start after it shut off, did it try at all to crank or is it completely dead like a blown fuse or lose connection? Do you have any lights with the key on? Horn?

Is there any ' uumph ' left in the battery at all ? Does the starter grunt, lights, etc ??  Jump or push it to get it running, stick a voltmeter across the battery and see what it says at about 2000 rpms.. It should be 13.5+..

Will check with a voltmeter.

It cranked over and stalled out, tried it again, but not enough juice to get it started.

Not an OEM, YAUSA (SP) battery.

those cheaper batteries are not always a bargain...haven't had a Yuasa battery last less than 5 or 6 years in either of our Hondas (99 is on its second that was replaced in 05 as a precaution for the ride to Sturgis, the 05 VTX is still on the original).
