I haven't been on here long so believe me when I say I'm not trying start anything...just sharing an experience from today.

I pulled in to get gas after a few hours out riding this afternoon and had a guy on a Road Glide on the pump behind me.  He gave me and the Valk a good look up and down and then went back to pumping gas but he kept looking over his shoulder.

I was still putzing around with stuff when he started his bike and pulled out.  On the way by he said something along the lines of "Un-American crap, Subaru motor in a Harley wannabe."  A few minutes later I was behind him going through some construction and when it came time to get back up to speed, it felt REALLY good blasting by him.  He downshifted as I went by but I think it only made him louder.    coolsmiley

I don't have that problem. I simply hit my mental ignorz button when I'm around other cruisers at gas stations.

Your mental ignorz button just sends them down the road to be ass hats to the rest of us.

I always point out that my Valk was built in Mary'sville Ohio, and the last I checked... Ohio was in America.  Every bit as much as Wisconsin is.

Plus you could remind him now that they are building Harleys in Mexico.

I always LOVE it when as mental midget hit's me with a "Buy American!!" when he's driving a a Toyota or even a Honda CRV. uglystupid2

Whatever.  Smoke 'em and get on with your life.

And don't forget that HD just built a factory in India.
The V-Rod is a product developed by Porsche in Germany.
And Valks have more domestic content than any HD biult between 97 through 03.

I got a pal with a Dyna Low rider that'll whip a stock Valk.  Probably a few blown valks too.  Probably not Doggs. Cheesy

His is a 131" with a LOAD of work.  I've seen the dyno slip at 167 HP, and I have ridden it.  It's FAST.

Most of the Harley riders around here have nothing but respect for the Valk.  They know it is faster and more reliable.  I have nothing against anyone riding what they want to ride.  Just don't berate my bike because it isn't like yours.  It is about the ride for me.

To rehash, the V-Rod engine began as a Harley racing engine called the VR 1000 in 1994.  Harley consulted Porsche since the new engine revved much higher than previous versions.  They were moderately successful with it.  When Harley decided to use this engine in a street model, they again consulted Porsche to make it "streetable".  Essentially, Porsche helped refine the engine, but did not design it.  Considering its relatively low performance compared to actual Porsche designs, it would be almost insulting to say Porsche designed it!   Cheesy

The "V-Rod" made use of the Revolution engine, developed jointly with Porsche that, for the first time in Harley public production history, features overhead cams, and liquid cooling.

There is nothing in this quote that differs significantly from my statement.  It is referring to the re-engineering of the VR 1000 into the V-Rod.

Here's another quote from your wiki page:

"The Revolution engine is based on the VR-1000 Superbike race program, developed by Harley-Davidson's Powertrain Engineering team."

I was at NHIS back in the early 2000's to see one of the last VR1000 races in person with Mike Smith (number 911, I crap you not) and Scott Russell riding them. They were embarrassing by that point because Honda, Kawi and Suzuki had all made major development strides with their RC45, ZX7RR and GSXR by that point and Ducati was also competitive. In the few years the VR1000 was in AMA SBK they had gotten nowhere developing that bike. It was a shame too because it was cool looking and neat sounding, but H-D was way out of their element in a class of really fast, highly developed machines. They'd have been better off giving the reins to Erik Buell.

My response to the Harley guys is this. I ask them why are there so mnay Harley dealerships. They always answer because the bike is so popular. I say no it is so you do not have to push it so far when it breaks down. 2funny I just crack the throttle and smile as I go by them and of course give them that funny point the finger at the ground wave.

I'm so confused!!!! ???

Since I ride both a Valk and a Harley, and I love them both, does that make me a wannabe one time, and a poseur another? Undecided

And I guess I must confuse a lot of guys because while riding my Valk, I point at the ground when waving also. (Actually I think that style of wave is based on the fact that if you are going fast, and wave like that, it tends to keep you more aero-dynamic, and your hand doesn't blow back into your face when it extends beyond the still air envelope provided by your Baker Air Wings).  laugh

Heck, the other day I committed an act of blasphemy and actually wore a H-D shirt while riding a Honda. I'm so ashamed!!! Embarrassed Who or what should have been more offended, the Honda or the shirt?

I'm so confused!!! ??? Shocked Roll Eyes Undecided

Thumbdick von Harley pulled up next to me at a light. I smiled, he didnt, some comment about real motorcycles and real men. I revved a little just before the light changed and he ripped it up right into the radar. I smiled again as I rode by.

That's the reaction I get from most H-D guys who bother initiating contact.

Subaru makes some great motors. Is that really an insult?

I think we should make truce with our Harley brothers and start disrespecting other brands. I pick those Ducati pasta burners. We should start dusting Super Sports at traffic lights.

Dusting? More like "lucky to stay in the race". Pick on the small bore Monsters instead.

Subaru and Valkyrie do both utilize boxer engines... so it is a fair comparison...  Not such a good insult from the Harley rider tho, since Subaru makes one of the most reliable car lines of all time!  I think HD riders are pissed at any bike that doesn't spend half its life at the repair shop!

I have often wondered if the European brand riders take as much crap from HD assclowns as Japanese brand riders do...

I don't ride a whole lot and I never go to rallies where there would be a bunch of Harleys. That being said, I've never once had a Harley rider to say or do anything out of disrespect for me or my bike. Early this summer a HD rider, who was with two others, pulled up beside me at a light and said "Man, that's a really nice bike! I've been thinking about maybe getting one of those one day". I told him thanks and that "I appreciate that". He was steady looking over the bike and the light changed. They turned off onto another road and I went on straight ahead. Yeah, I was kind of surprised because of all the stories I've heard over the years. And I'm sure I'll run into a completely different attitude some day. Don't know how I'll deal with it till it happens but I'm too old to fight. Problem is that I'm not smart enough to hold my tongue. We'll see.
