You have all seen bicycle helmets that have the open slots or holes for venting.  Why can't someone design a motorcycle helmet like that?

My guess as to why they're not...

MC's are capable of greater speeds there by increasing potential impact loads to a helmet. Something with any more openings then typical vents would not be capable of dispersing the impact force point to a greater portion of the helmet shell, as they are designed to do. And, there's likely no chance they could be DOT approved.

Quite frankly, I wouldn't even where a non-approved DOT [or greater] helmet. Why bother, unless your a non-helmet wearer and don't care what you wear why traveling through a helmet state.

I always wear a helmet and will continue.  Just looking for something to stay cooler.  I usually wear a doo rag and soak it in cold water and gas stops.

But I hear ya on the safety issue and you are right.

I always thought it was due to the penetration test. A big hole will fail.  Bicycle helmet don't have a spike test as far as I know. This based not on fact but purely on conjecture and stuff i read on the net (so it has to be true  Cheesy).

While big gaping holes will certainly flow more air, I've gotta say that there's a huge difference between the venting in a 200 dollar HJC and a 700 dollar Arai. My Arais are quite cool at speed.

I had a buddy whose head was so large he could rarely ever find a helmet that fit properly.  When he did he would wear it until they just wore out.  In his last few years he was slowing down and riding scooters instead of motorcycles and started wearing hockey helmets.  I dont know where he got them but they fit his big ol' noggin and it beat riding without any helmet at all.

Why not a 3/4 design like the new Arai XC-Ram but with a 3/4" aluminum bar for a chin guard? Just enough to keep you from breaking your jaw in an accident but much less obtrusive than the current full face helmets. Or maybe two bars, one from each side that don't even touch by about 2". That would make an awesome place to mount a microphone to go along with the speakers in the headset.

Just a few thoughts,

I'd imagine the bars could become deadly if broken free and driven into your face or skull in an impact.  That may affect DOT approval.

When its your time its your time.  DOT approved or not.  I recently was involved in a Bike versus Car incodent and i wasnt wearing a helmet.  I sure wish i would have been wearing a cup though.  We all have our different desires and worries while riding.  Let those who ride decide.  Helmet laws suck.

I believe also that at highway speeds, you would have trouble both with wind noise, and with the wind grabbing on to those slots, and trying to rip it off your head.

If I read that correctly...doesn't Nolan have an open-face with a removable chin bar? N-43 Trilogy?

I have a Shark Evoline modular, it has a chin bar that flips up and locks into the back of the helmet, converting from full to 3/4 helmet. I also have a couple of older Nolan modulars, and the Shark seems quieter.

I know the one you're talking about and I'm considering it to replace my N-102 when it gives up the ghost.

They are out there, and the reason they are not sold in the US is because of the DOT requirements  Undecided

I just got a Nolan N43 Trilogy earlier this season.  It is based on the European verson called the Nolan N43 'AIR'.  The European version has a HUGE air vent where the US version has a much smaller vent.

My helmet is OK, for a 3/4 convertable, but I sure wish I could have gotten one of the Euro versions.

Pictures and review of the European 'N43 'AIR', here...  Note the large top vent.

http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/motorcycle-helmet/nolan-n43/

Video and review of the US version here...  Note the much smaller top vent.

Hope this helps  Wink

i've been using a fulmer "modus" for a few years now. need to replace it.
went to the fulmer site, and it's now called the m-1. it's only available it black now(in 3x)
still has the pitiful venting(apparently they have never ridden behind a windshield)
would like to try that n43 "air". can it be bought here in the U.S.?

never mind just found it only goes to 2x tickedoff

My understanding is that you can 'get' one, but you would need to order one from a european MC accessory store...  I thought about that, but with Customs, exchange rate, and the possibility of an improper fit, I just got the 'Trilogy' from a US seller.

Several points here:
First, don't confuse the argument for/against helmet laws with the argument for/against helmets.  I would vote against helmet laws every time, if they were put to a referendum.  Whether I choose to wear a helmet or not has nothing to do with my opinions on helmet laws.
Second, why do you have brakes on your Valkyrie?  When it's your time, it's your time.  Brakes or not.  They don't help in every situation, therefore, they must be useless.  [/intentional overstatement to make a point]
Riding with a helmet is a risk.  Riding without a helmet is a greater risk.  In the majority of accidents, wearing a helmet at the time of impact will increase both your quantity of life, and your quality of life.  I'm confident that someone could design a crash that a helmet would either harm me, or leave me a vegetable, but if I could choose the type of crash, I would choose the type where I don't hit anything.  I can only bet on the odds, and the odds are heavily weighted in the "help me" category.
That being said, riding is a risk, helmet or no.  Walking out the front door is a risk as well.  How you live your life is where you choose to draw the line of acceptable risk.  I  choose to draw that line at a point beyond riding with a helmet, but short of riding without one.  If you choose to draw that line beyond riding without a helmet, so be it.  That is your choice.  However, don't try to fool yourself (or more importantly, anyone else) into believing that you haven't added any risk to your life.

Very true, I would think - Even the visor, can be troublesome, as stated by Brittany Morrow:

(Read the story by clicking here)
Quote
I felt a rush of wind hit my face like a brick and our bodies separated in an instant; my visor had come completely open. The force pulled on my face and helmet so hard that it sent my head up and backwards, ripping my entire body off the back seat with it.

Lyn-Del,

I've been seriously considering the Shark Evoline ST 2 helmet. They just changed US distribution and getting one seems a bit of a hit or miss deal at the moment. There was a black Evoline 2 on a Valkyrie at Inzane. I certainly like the idea of the Shark. I'd appreciate reading your thoughts on it. The ST version has some speaker cutouts that should be a good thing for my EdSets. I really like the MooVit version in white.

Thank You,

I bought my Shark after I got my '09 VMax.  Every single helmet I owned, half, full, or modular, would "float" on that bike, and it was extremely uncomfortable.  I tried the Shark and it not only didn't float, it was more comfortable than the others.  It has a built in sun shade as well, handy to have.

I don't wear helmets if I can help it, so it's not a daily use item, but I don't recall having any noise issues with it, I can hear my iPod audio book just fine.
