US borrowing tops 100% of GDP: TreasuryUS debt shot up $238 billion to reach 100 percent of gross domestic project after the government's debt ceiling was lifted, Treasury figures showed Wednesday. Treasury borrowing jumped Tuesday, the data showed, immediately after President Barack Obama signed into law an increase in the debt ceiling as the country's spending commitments reached a breaking point and it threatened to default on its debt. The new borrowing took total public debt to $14.58 trillion, over end-2010 GDP of $14.53 trillion, and putting it in a league with highly indebted countries like Italy and Belgium. http://news.yahoo.com/us-aaa-rating-still-under-threat-204040123.html U.S. eats up most of debt limit in one day $239 billion spike uses up 60% of funding OK’d on Tuesday http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2011/aug/3/us-eats-most-debt-limit-one-day/

Much as I hate cut-and-paste jobs, I though this one was rather poignant... The following is a breakdown of federal spending in terms that put the 2011 federal budget into perspective:
• Federal income from all sources (primarily taxes) is $2.17 trillion.
• The 2011 federal budget is $3.82 trillion.
• The above results in a shortfall (deficit) of $1.65 trillion.
• Add to this that the U.S. already owes Russia, China, Japan, etc., $14.27 trillion (the national debt).
In order to understand these huge numbers more easily, let's remove eight zeros and deal with this as if it were the household budget for the fictitious Smith family.
• The Smith family's annual income is $21,700.
• But for reasons of their own, they spend $38,200 per year.
• This means the Smiths will spend $16,500 more than they will take in and thus have to pay 43 percent of their bills with a credit card.
• However, the Smith family already owes $142,710 on its credit cards.
So let me ask two questions:
One, if you were a creditor, how eager would you be to lend the Smiths any more money?
Two, if you were the head of the Smith household, what would you do to keep the roof over your family's heads and prevent creditors from repossessing your car, furniture, TV, etc.?
When put into this perspective, is it really so terrible that the tea party is demanding a balanced-budget amendment be part of any deal in Congress? And if it is so terrible, I wish someone would write a letter to the editor and explain why.
(I cut and pasted this one from here - http://www.vaildaily.com/ARTICLE/20110803/LETTER/110809969/-1/RSS but I've seen numerous slightly different versions floating around)

Damn it Bobbo, you just proved that I didn't make it up! Just like I thought posting the ENTIRE O'Reilly segment would show that I wasn't making up the terrorist thing. I didn't even add any extra comments other than we laughed about it, and yet I was told I made it up and took it out of context.

The Pols need Proverty to keep them in office. They know as long as they hand out a living no matter how meager the ones that make a lifestyle of welfare will keep the votes coming. The sin is it kills all that makes us proud, productive humans that respect what others achieve. Not jealous and envious and determined that we deserve what another achieves. They are ever on the hunt to find more ways to reduce humanity to this state. After all they know what is better for us than we do. They like to keep the race thing stirred up also, it all adds to their power base. I saw where Biden is charging the Secret Service a couple of grand + per month to house the protective detail he gets. It makes me sick that there is very few truly honorable law makers in our capital. If you dont believe they are all in it togeather, the deal they just made probably will result in another term for our beloved president. The Republicans had all the cards, and made much ballyhoo about stoping the insanity, then gave it all away to the Dems. Our Country is in very deep trouble that is only going to get worse. The Class warfare that is going on is just a smoke screen. Obama is using those same rich people he sneers at to stuff his campain coffers. Arent most of the Pols millionairs, but somehow they are different than the other sorry rich people. Didnt the Tax Dodger IRS head hire thousands of auditors to make sure you pay your fair share. Is not health care, one of the easiest ways to controll the public on its way to becoming totally ran by the government. Has not the groundswell Tea Party been demonized as terrorist and worse, just because they are bucking the system. The next thing if his suprimicy gets re elected will be the guns, then they will really be in controll. We are already headed toward a Gay military, so the public will have little or no protection there.

Strong Eagle has said Tax those rich and not so rich and we will pay that debt down.
Bobbo would say the Social Programs are the best part this president can do for us.
I say the budget and the healthcare that is coming is going to crush us like a grape under my 270lbs..
All of this can be aswaged if we elect a person that will forgo the healthcare thing.
Notice I said person, not a man in particular.
Stop needless spending.
Show some back bone and lead without consensus and with good ole horse sense.
We have no leader that can lead.
Congress just worries about the next election.
No body cares about you and I.
Vote next time with some sense, you just might see it turn around.
But if you put him back in ,we are finished .
Mark my words.
Before it's too late.

Bobbo sorry if I offended you.
You are a Liberal and just had you in mind.
Sorry.
But these are the kind of folks that put Mr. Wonderless in the White House.
We need to rethink the Anti-Bush thing and get this thing back on track with a good candidate not a social organizer that
has no idea what he is doing.
It is more important now than ever to come together or we will all fall alone.
It is the only thing we should be concerned about is OUR COUNTRY and nothing else.

We need to rethink the Anti-Bush thing I don't think we need to do that. Yes, Obama's been a disappointment, but that doesn't mean Bush should get a pass. He was disastrous too. Obama took a country that was already in a huge mess and failed to make it better. Bush took a country that was in decent shape and drove it head-on into an Oshkosh.

I’m probably the only person in America that was HOPING that they wouldn’t raise the debt ceiling; all it really means is that they’ll spend more. People are more concerned about their 401k then they are for their children’s future, when in reality, their 401k’s won’t be worth a crap win or loose. We’re bankrupt. Plain and simple. We’ve passed the point of no return. I’d like ANYONE to prove me wrong.

Solo1, Unfortunately the worse the economy becomes, the more folks will look to the government to bail them out. It is a vicious circle with the only way out being a vibrant, healthy economy, creating jobs and incomes for the citizens of this country. (Note that I said "Citizens of this country") Big Al Unfortunately there are those that believe in a free lunch. They voted the last time and they're still around.

What kind of delusional comment is that?! The gays I knew in high school were among the toughest ones there since they had to fight a lot! The fact that on top of repealing dont ask, dont tell Obama also has appointed two gay activist to the West Point advisory board. This will directly affect our military leaders and those that serve under them. If you value your military career, you cannot buck the system. The ignore feature is such a blessing on a thread like this. The market tanks and the regine/dems/libs blame the ones who were against raising our debt limit. If it went way up, those same nitwits would be taking all the credit that adding to our debt is such a good thing. When you're in a hole, you need a ladder (balanced budget), not a shovel (more debt). All the best, Mark

Big Al Unfortunately there are those that believe in a free lunch. They voted the last time and they're still around. well it's not so much the free lunch as it is the free healthcare, condoms, cellphones, scooterchairs, diabetic supplies, heatingassistance, coolingassistance, debtrelief, and other sundry items

As I see it, ALL, and I do mean ALL of our elected asshats in Washington, are thinking only of power, their party and getting reelected. Our country is going down while these #$%^& are thinking only of themselves. Now you add to that , many are also seriously in need of common sense, and the result is that we have one master cluster.......
I've kept the good thoughts to myself.
Solo, I agree with you whole heartily. I’ve said it to my wife, friends, and who ever else will listen, ALL POLITICIANS only care for themselves and their re-election. It’s all about ME!! I’m probably the only person in America that was HOPING that they wouldn’t raise the debt ceiling; all it really means is that they’ll spend more. People are more concerned about their 401k then they are for their children’s future, when in reality, their 401k’s won’t be worth a crap win or loose. Electing public servants has long since gone from being a draft of the person best suited for the job (assuming it ever really was) to a popularity contest where the voters cast their ballot for the despot who's self-interest most closely aligns with their own. But there's a twist! Politicians aren't doing anything that the average American hasn't been guilty of over the past several decades which is; living beyond their means and going into debt for crap they don't need. Yer right. As I've said here before. Our elections seem more and more cartoonish, more and more like professional wrestling of the 70's. A lot of shortsighted but loud BS and shortsighted voters eating it up. And all the while we sell our descendants futures to anyone or any country who will loan us money. It's like taking out a loan and your signature on it indentures your children and grandchildren to pay it off for you. Without their permission or approval of course. Basically we are enslaving our children and grandchildren to pay for what we want but can't afford.
