It seems my I/S wants to jump out of gear in 3rd and sometimes 4th. Its a 99 with over 56000 on the clock. As far as I know, the bike has never been down and the gearshifter has never been bent. Don't know if I'm not upshifting hard enough or what is going on. Anyone else ever had this problem??

It's happened to me once or twice. I learned to shift with more authority and it doesn't happen any more. Fred.

Pre-loading your shifts helps a lot along with "using authority". I've also noticed some motor oils are better or worse with regard to the tranny & shifting & staying in gear. Oils that have given me no problems... Repsol HondaLine Brands = Spectro Mobile One Ones to avoid... Inexpensive automotive oils Now I've opened a can of worms.... CAUTION WITH AUTOMOTIVE OILS = No Friction Modifiers - for slip free clutches.

That is one reason I went with a Kickshifter. Used to speed shift and either miss 2nd or it would fly back out. Put the kickshiftrer on 240K miles ago and I don't recall having another pop out of gear. You have to shift the Valkyrie with authority. Slam it in hard and it will stay....

Sometimes babying it will cause what you describe. Oil will not! Without insult, have you actually gotten down on the ground and taken a hard look at the mechanism and determined that there is no obstruction from an ill-positioned shift lever. Seems to me that there are two possible places where it could be put on the shafts incorrectly. This has been a problem with some who have changed their exhaust pipes. I would tend to think this may be the problem. ***

+1. When I first got the bike I thought I had a problem because it jumped out of gear three times in one ride, then a few more times over the course of the next week. I was really starting to get worried. Then one day I rode with steel toes and had no issue whatsoever. That led me to think that with my regular (and very broken in) riding boots that I just wasn't being positive enough with my shifts. I started paying more attention to the engagement and I've only had it happen once or twice in the 4000 miles since.

Boxer rebellion, the Holy Child. They all pay their rent. But none together can testify to the rhythm of a road well bent. Saddles and zip codes, passports and gates, the Jones' keep. In August the water is trickling, in April it's furious deep.

+1 on the kickshifter. It is very rare that I miss a shift with it, but I do remember it did take some getting used to at first. Now I couldn't ride without it. Too bad it's a worthless recommend as you can't get them anymore. Second best, preload.
As to oil, I recommend a robust olive oil, perhaps Cladivm, but if you are new to the experience, you may want to start with something more mild, like Trimarchi di Villa Marchese. Either way you can't go wrong with a good oil in terms of fruitiness with a good bitter and nice peppery finish. Wait, are you guys talking about some other kind of oil?

Sometimes babying it will cause what you describe. Oil will not! OK Ricky I suppose oil had nothing to do with my experience. The one time in 13 years I poured a cheap motor oil [no modifiers] into mine and experienced shift slips and rough shifting, never before witnessed by me, was due to my left foot & hand! What I experienced never occurred prior to or post of the cheap chit oil. It was really me and I just convinced myself it was the oil and subconsciously reformatted my shift style to prove myself correct.
