For those of you who have a tv cable service with the video on demand feature(VOD), there is an interesting show on Speed VOD called "Speedmakers". Check out episode #8. The show is about the building of the Thunderbird but also shows some history(a little) of Triumph Motorcycles. I found it interesting because of the "hands on" manufacturing versus the "robots do it all" of the Japanese factories.

The show runs about 45 min and helped me through a boring afternoon.

Damn Comcast..... Video won't run for for more then 15 seconds without stopping.  All this hoopla about Xfinity.  It was much better before.  Starting to wonder about DSL......

I was able to watch the whole thing without stopping thru DSL connection .... what is your internet speed ??  We bumped ours up to 3 megs and made a HUGE difference.

Check your speed using this ....

Sorry, I apologize, totally irrelevant, but I had to brag... While watching the show, ran the speedtest:

I love having fiber optic straight to my house...

That is totally AWESOME .... but we live out in the sticks .... I think the fastest we could get was 10mb/s.  Can't imagine how fast 20 mb/s is ....

Speedtest was atrocious!! .18 mb down, 1 mb up.  Ping test though did okay and rated my line a "B."

Gotta call Comcast.  But no matter what, they'll want to send a guy to the house and I'll have to wait around when they sch it 2 weeks out.

About DSL.  I must be totally confused.  I thought DSL was only good up to around 54 K (not much faster then dialup)

This is something new, it was screaming until a couple of weeks ago, when they "upgraded" to Xfinity.

Ok....I have no idea what a good speed is, but we just signed up for Comcast DSL and when I did the test, got 30+ download and 20+ upload.  The sales guy never mentioned numbers, just said it would be a lot faster?  So, is that fast or not?

Seriously ignorant computer person.

You're probably right about Japanese makers - at least NOW.  Back in '01, when I toured the Marysville plant, you might be pleased to know I saw NO robots on the line.  Our Valks were  assembled by real people.  That day, they weren't building Valks.  I did see Gold Wings and VTX's (I think, mighta been Shadows) being assembled.  That was the assembly line however.  I didn't see the sub-assemblies being built - like frame welding and the like.

Secondly - watched the Thunderbird video.  The announcer said "In the cruiser world, most radiators are air cooled.  Not THIS rebel.  The Thunderbird's radiator is liquid cooled!"  Makes me wonder what the fan is for...and what cools the liquid that cools the radiator - apparently a secondary heat exchanger like they use on my house, solar water heater.

Seriously, with a prepared script like they made for this show, you wonder who the heck is the editor, or who fact-checks the script.  Clearly the announcer is ignorant of bikes / mechanics / terminology.  Reminds me of the news anchor who declared "The shooter had hi-capacity clips for his 9mm automatic revolver..."  ARGGHH.  MAGAZINES not "clips"; an "automatic revolver"?????

Yeah, I picked up on that radiator thing too. Didn't think too much about it, only that the scriptwriter didn't know what he/she was talking about.
I also toured the Marysville plant back in the late 80's or early 90's. Most of the robotics I saw were the painters.
I just thought I'd share something I thought was interesting, not trying to make a "point" about anything.

AFAIK, DSL refers to the phone company.  Regardless, if you're clocking 30+ and 20+ megabytes, you're screaming.  I had Comcast support on the phone today.  They told me I'm guaranteed as a home user 2 megabyte download, 1 mb upload, which I'm not getting.

My kid is home from college, and even though I never see him doing anything that would rob all the bandwidth, it still slows dow noticeably when he's home.  He's going back soon, so I'll put it on the back burner until then.

Problem solved.  Was using an old 11 mb router.  While it worked okay with our Windoze machines, it was shaky with this machine, a new Imac.  Put a new, state of the art router on it, and am getting over 20mb down, about 4mb up.  A far cry from fiber optics, but it's like going from a turtle to a race horse for me.

I was going to mention the router .... ours was giving us trouble as well .... working just fine and then all of a sudden got REAL slow. Hooked up a newer router and works just fine.

Now you'll be able to watch the Triumph video non-stop  cooldude

I tend to think of things like routers as work/broken.  No harm, no foul.  Just glad I didn't go berserk  tickedoff  on the phone with the Comcast guy!  Embarrassed

Finally got a chance to watch it.  Was toying with the idea of buying one a few months back.  It just didn't look comfortable for my wife in the back.

They tuned it to sound like a V-twin.  Yikes.  Too bad.  Guess you have to if you want to sell them to the "me too" crowd.  Wink
