Boy did you  make a lot of extra work for me.
Why didn't you tell me to put a 10mm bolt in from the outside?  I got down to the machine tonight and tried to put my modified bolt in from the inside like I planned.  No go, head scratching, tried from the outside, goes in and stops.  Take the old bolt, goes right thru. Put the 10 mm bolt in from the outside.  Put on wrench, screws right in.  Take it out screw it in, cuss a bit.  Measure how much is on the inside.  Hack saw.  Screw in, just below flush on the inside.  Unscrew, medium loktite, screw back in.  Done.
After I got the rear wheel on I raised the tire from the extended shock position till it hit.  I have over 5" of travel before the tire rubs.  Problem solved.
I would really like to talk to the PO and find out why he did that.  He put a 3/8" bolt in a perfectly good 10mm hole.  In defense of myself I would like to remind everyone that  1/2" nut and a 12mm nut are the same size.  So when I removed the bolt with a 12mm wrench I made the rash assumption that it was a metric bolt.  I spent $27 on stainless metric hardware when all I needed was one 10mm bolt.
All of that grief for nothing.  I appreciate all of the info and help.
I really could use a "tongue in cheek" emoticon.

Dude, have you ever read some of my griping about my I/S's po not doing maintenance?  It seems to be universal.  Was at Warlock's yesterday with my Tourer.  While I cleaned the carb bowls, Warlock replaced the pilot jets with 38s and cleaned the mains.  Then when I was reinstalling the carb bank, Warlock removed the timing cover to replace the timing belts, idlers and springs.  What he discovered was scary.  One of the pos had the left idler pulley replaced at some time.  It seems whoever did it didn't have a clue what they were doing.  First the bolt that held the timing plate, pulley and trigger wheel was way overtightened.  Second, when the timing plate was forced on, it flattened the locating projection on the backside of the plate.  Warlock said if I had tried to adjust the valves, I wouldn't have been able to do it cause the timing marks were off.  It's possible I could have screwed the engine up seriously all do the the negligence of a po.

I hope one of my new owners never has a reason to look at my work like that.  I try to do things right.

Adding hardbags & backrest to my buddy's 2007 VTX a while back I discovered a nice previous owner touch. He had forced 7/16 bolts through the fender struts into the reinforcement! Threaded their own threads. Shocked Had to pull the reinforcement completely off the bike, grind out the stripped out nuts & weld new proper size metric nuts back in before I could proceed with the bag install.
Don't even get me started on all the damage I had to fix on the '99 I bought last year!  tickedoff

I new what he meant. Done 2 Valkyrie that day. Also desmogged one. Then worked on a Spyder. Put new bearings in the rear end, new tire, new idler pulley installed on the belt drive to help reduce shaking in the belt. Finished up yesterday on the Spyder with plug change out, clutch fluid change out, anti freeze change out. Getting ready to take a ride now. On Marty's bike someone had put the outer plate that lines up to line up on TDC about 90 degree off and also bent the little tap that seats in the outer belts drive pulley. I ended up drilling out the plate notching the washer so I could put a line up pin and make sure things was back correct. Not the first time I have seen this. Anyway Marty got a good on hand experience in carb work. To get the bolt a loose on the timing plate had to get my buddy to also hold the other side of the cam gear. I was afraid it would jump a tooth trying to loosen the bolt. They must had used a impact. I would say it was probably torqued to over a 100 lbs.

I figured since I had helped you pull the carb bank on my I/S and Sutherncop didn't have any hands on experience working on a Valk that you were letting me see how much I remembered and spread my wings on it.  Considering the mods I installed in that area with cruise and the Dual Fuel Feed System, it was probably best.
