Just got me a Valk 99 tourer 32000 miles. At low idle is has some hesitation and it seems to be running a bit rich. Also any suggestion on an easy pipe poilsh? I have bluing on the pipes. Love this board I would appreciate any suggestions and advice. I'm a nominally decent wrench.

There's not much you can really do to the pipes without reducing the protection of the chrome plating.

Most all remedies for removing the bluing involve abrasives of one sort or another.

Some cover their exhaust with a ceramic coat.  Others may use high heat coverings.

The blue is the top layer of the chrome plating which is oxidizing. Stock pipes involve a pipe inside a pipe and the stock pipe are the best chrome plating available for the Valkyrie.

I think most all aftermarket pipes eventually blue.

check the vacuum lines for cracks. it only has 32k so they may be dry rotted.

Since your problem is most apparent at idle.

Turn the pilot jet screws (on the bottom of each carb) in 1/4 turn and test, If it appears to help but still not totally right try another 1/4 turn.

You need a special tool to adjust he jets, D shaped, search the site for how to make or purchase one.

The first thing I would do is to add a can of Seafoam to a full tank of gas and run that through, to see if improves the hesitation.

The idle should be between 900 and 1000 rpm's.

There is a knob between the no-1 and no-3 carburetors, in up there fairly deep, and not too obvious.

The knob is the idle adjustment. Turn clockwise for increase, opposite for decrease.

Adding something to the gasoline is the best idea, especially if you are using ethanol enriched gasoline.

i would caution that any carburetor adjustments as suggested should wait since there is a chance you could just be piling problem upon problem.

coolsmiley Guys, thanks for the input. I will try some TECHRON and or Seafoam to see if that helps any. It gets to 85 in 3rd gear pretty easily without any issues. I will check for vac leaks as well. I live in Minneapolis Area.

Do many of you Valk riders powdercoat your exhaust or just live with the bluing? Pipe covers?

I have a set of Two Brothers 6x6 that had blue on the headers when I bought them.  I spent hours polishing those suckers.  They were shiny bright when I finished.  cooldude   Even the guy who sold them to me was asking what polish I used.   ???   They turned blue again within hours of running them on the bike after reinstall.  They stayed blue after that   crazy2

Any ideas on a good set of highway pegs or boards? I see the Kuryakyns for 250+, just seems spendy to me.

As I just bought this bike, what kind of maintenance should I do to it? Would it simply be better to bring it to the stealer this one time to have them go through it, doing the vac check and bearings, spline shaft, shocks (F and B) brakes etc.

I would appreciate your suggestions.  Angry

I have these and they weren't anywhere near $250.  I think they are great and would recommend to anyone.

They can be configured to just about anyones height depending on where you put them. Only cost $145.00 for me.

Regarding maintenance, there is a lot of info in the shoptalk section.
The brake and clutch fluid should be changed if it's darker than diluted ice tea. The final drive splines should be cleaned and greased as soon as you can, dry spines will grind down pretty quick.
The air filter can probably wait if the gas mileage is not too terrible.
Antifreeze should be changed when you get to it (unless it's looking bad).
Starter switch maintenace is a good idea.
When was the oil changed last, the book says 8,000 miles.
Take a look at the brake pads, OEM are easy on the rotors, so are "organic" pads supposed to be.
I didn't notice if you stated the mileage of the bike, but the life expectancy of brake pads, depending on riding style and where those miles were ridden, can vary a lot.

Dag has the best 'price' on a manual (http://www.valkyrienorway.com/index.html).
Look on the left column and click 'Valkyrie Document Center'.

Stock headers don't color unless abused.  Meaning, engine run too rich, too lean, or the bike run for awhile with no air flowing over the pipes.  Forget & leave the choke on, that will do it.  You would have to be not paying attention, leaving the choke on reduces power.  Bike badly out of tune - that will do it too.  Your rich condition could have cause it.  Lastly, running the bike periodically in the garage instead of winterizing - that will do it too.  You can get away with that if you set up a fan.  BTW, these bikes, not much winterizing required.  Not like a Harley.  That's another subject for another thread.

Fix the tuning problem, get another set of OEM pipes, and your colored headers will be a memory. They will last indefinitely without coloring if you mind these issues.  You can find lightly used pipes on ebay, among other places.  Or guess what, I can find them for you too - with a pipe mod of course.  Watch for my banner on these boards - Horseapple Ranch.  Cheers!
