Elvis Aaron Presley (January 8, 1935 – August 16, 1977) was one of the most popular American singers of the 20th century. A cultural icon, he is widely known by the single name Elvis. He is often referred to as the "King of Rock and Roll" or simply "the King". Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, Presley moved to Memphis, Tennessee, with his family at the age of 13. He began his career there in 1954 when Sun Records owner Sam Phillips, eager to bring the sound of African-American music to a wider audience, saw in Presley the means to realize his ambition. Accompanied by guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black, Presley was one of the originators of rockabilly, an uptempo, backbeat-driven fusion of country and rhythm and blues. RCA Victor acquired his contract in a deal arranged by Colonel Tom Parker, who would manage the singer for over two decades. Presley's first RCA single, "Heartbreak Hotel", released in January 1956, was a number one hit. He became the leading figure of the newly popular sound of rock and roll with a series of network television appearances and chart-topping records. His energized interpretations of songs, many from African American sources, and his uninhibited performance style made him enormously popular—and controversial. In November 1956, he made his film debut in Love Me Tender. Conscripted into military service in 1958, Presley relaunched his recording career two years later with some of his most commercially successful work. He staged few concerts, however, and, guided by Parker, proceeded to devote much of the 1960s to making Hollywood movies and soundtrack albums, most of them critically derided. In 1968, after seven years away from the stage, he returned to live performance in a celebrated comeback television special that led to an extended Las Vegas concert residency and a string of profitable tours. In 1973, Presley staged the first concert broadcast globally via satellite, Aloha from Hawaii, seen by approximately 1.5 billion viewers. Prescription drug abuse severely compromised his health, and he died suddenly in 1977 at the age of 42. Presley is regarded as one of the most important figures of 20th-century popular culture. He had a versatile voice and unusually wide success encompassing many genres, including country, pop ballads, gospel, and blues. He is the best-selling solo artist in the history of popular music. Nominated for 14 competitive Grammys, he won three, and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at age 36. He has been inducted into four music halls of fame.

It's amazing that so many of the greatest talents get sucked into the road to early death. Makes you wonder if "having it all" is really worth having it all. RIP Elvis.

Maybe Eichmann Bachmann had a slip of the tongue. Did he really die? According to my scientific reference material ( Uncle John's Bathroom Reader ) questions remain. Uncle Johns Bathroom Reader,, I got one and love it,, had it 16 years and almost got it memorized,,,

I am a HUGE Elvis fan! I have amplified speakers on the Valk and plug my Ipod into them for my tunes on the road. Earlier this year I was going to a sandwich shop by my house and I was on the Valk. I have a number of Elvis songs on my Ipod and one came on as I was pulling into the parking lot. I turned the volume up as I looked for a place to park the bike. I found a store front spot and pulled in. I turned the bike off but not the Ipod (never trun off an Elvis tune till it's done) As I sat there and listened, I look in one of the mirrors and coming up behind me were 4 women from ages 25 to 40 I guess and they were (as best as I can describe it) DANCE WALKING to the Elvis beat. I turned around to look at them and the just smiled and said GREAT MUSIC! I thought, yup, it is great music.

Darkmeister, You’re comparing Michele Bachmann to Adolf Eichmann? I’ve seen some amazingly ignorant BS on this board, but ‘linking’ a sitting Congresswoman, who whether you like her or not has a remarkable personal story, to a Nazi? This is absolutely a new low for this board. It makes me SICK! I’m assuming you’re just too stupid to know who Eichmann was. Let me help you. He was responsible, perhaps more than anyone else, for MURDERING millions of Jews.
This is the type of stuff that shouldn’t have to “be reported” Willow. YOU SHOULD TAKE CARE OF THIS WITHOUT BEING PROMPTED. And, shame on ANYONE who doesn’t condemn this hateful garbage.
The responses to this will be telling. . . .

Yeah, I wouldn't compare her to Eichmann and I think it's pretty insulting and out of line. But I've heard equally illogical leaps comparing Obama to some real historical despots right here on this board. I don't recall your outrage surfacing then. The way I see it is; if you're gonna get all bent about crap like this then either be consistent in your defense of people who don't deserve being compared to mass murderers of historical significance or don't act as though you're above it.

I've deleted the original post since even some whose opinions I value think it is out of line. Misplaced humor based on an old joke, albeit inappropriate. I suppose you also think I truly use Uncle John's reader as definitive reference material? I also suppose what you meant is that 'what I said was stupid'; not that I am stupid? Of course. You don't indulge in personal attacks. At least not on your own: "And, shame on ANYONE who doesn’t condemn this hateful garbage. The responses to this will be telling."

I love a radio DJ who gives fair warning that an Elvis song is coming up, gives me plenty time to change the station.

Anvil, you would’ve been better served and earned more respect (look the word up) if you’d stopped after your first sentence, but that’s not in your character or maturity level. With the exception of the 3 or 4 other ‘enlightened intellectuals’ here, anyone whose read your postings since you sprung on the scene a few months ago would agree. So, I’m not going to go ‘tit for tat’ with you on any issue. Why would I? My Jack Russell’s make more sense than you do on most issues. I’m content with the understanding that you wouldn’t say 1/10 of the vile crap you spit out if you were face to face with most of the people you attack here. The internet has created a whole new class of ‘badasses’ who type away alone and secure in the dark. Go figure.
Darkmeister; I don’t know what you use as a definitive source of reference material. You said ‘Uncle John Reader’ and I believed you. You mean you don’t? It’s as accurate – maybe more so – than any of the network news or weekly liberal bias news rags. So why not?
Finally; was I engaging in a ‘personal attack’ and calling YOU stupid? Technically I said I was ‘assuming’ you were too stupid to know who Adolf Eichmann was since the posting was so out of line (HEY! Even people you ‘value’ thought so! WOW!) You can take it however you want.
