Author Topic: Help please! Can't get pilot screws to turn in or out  (Read 1651 times)

Wanted to do a carb sync due to slight engine vibration under load.
 
Trying to check adjustment of pilot screws, right side #5 I can turn it in or out. I adjusted to 2.25 turns. Seems like #5 was 1/2 turn out to start with. #3 & #1 no go, can't turn in or out. I am using Redeye's adjustment tool.

I have removed all intakes and sprayed homemade brew of ATF & acetone into all pilot holes to see if it will help loosen them.

99 Interstate 104,000 miles. Carb sync last done at Inzane Johnson City 2007? by Big BF.

Any ideas short of pulling carb banks?

You need a motion pro carb tool. Just got thru working on a carb bank with froze pilots. Took me a while working them little by little in each way till they finally came loose. I did have the hole bank setting on my work table.

i've been where you are.    Carb bank has to come out.  gas drained from bowls.  you can use a bit of heat from a propane torch on the casting and they should let go.  mine were so varnished in there I had to cut a slot in for a flat blade screwdriver as I rounded off the D.  When you get them out watch for the o-ring and washer.  Lube them up with never sieze.  good luck

I think its pretty easy to 'round' them over.. You may be able to get at them by removing the intakes and using a dremel to slot the heads.. The cutting disk may cut into the housing,but, I don't think that will hurt anything.. I've not had to do this, I've always been able to get them to turn.. I slot all of them and add a little dab of never-sieze to the threads..

Thanks for the responses guys! Ive let them soak overnite after spraying several times. I've had good luck with the ATF acetone solution in the past. I will try turning them this morning and try to get the Motion Pro tool as several MC shops around here might have one.

I guess bank removal would be the next step as the # 5 pilot was not adjusted correctly when I started.

I sincerely doubt that any motorcycle shop will have that tool.

The socket from Motion Pro is probably the best tool for what you want to do.

I think that if you found that one carburetor adjustment so "off", it most likely a result from a tinkering by a previous owner.

I would suggest not to be so eager to get them all loose where you might damage one.

There have been many reports of messing up using an ill fitting tool in trying to get them loose.

Thanks for the offer but I've ordered the Motion Pro 90 degree carb tool online. Should be here in a day or two. Hopefully I can get the other 4 carb pilots to turn with the tool without removing carb banks.

I'm up in the hills and twisties of Sussex County.
