Four wheels move the body, 2 wheels move the soul

Van, Texas

« on: August 17, 2011, 03:28:39 AM »

It aint 6th street, but planning on riding to Cushing on Saturday September 17 to eat a a place called 7th street cafe for lunch around 11:30.  Been rated by Texas Monthly as one of the top 40 small cafes in Texas. KSU at 8:00 at the Loves on I20 and 314 in Van.  Route will take us through Lindale, Winona, Alto, Troup, New Summerfield (stop for gas and RR), Reklaw and then into Cushings, utilizing as many East Texas Riding Roads as possible.  If you can not make it to Van will be happy to stop and pick up along the route.  Or you can just meet us at 7th street cafe.
754 7th St
Cushing Texas

Here is one review
I took a slight detour off my usual route home from my parents' house to try the 7th Street Restaurant for dinner on a Monday night. It was well worth the longer drive!

The night's dinner special, pork chops, was the same thing I'd eaten for lunch, so I tried the fried catfish instead; it was the best I've had in quite some time. The sides I chose with it (corn nuggets and fried okra) were delicious, and the sweet tea was nice and strong.

Exposed red brick walls give the building a very welcoming atmosphere, decorated with old farm & ranch tools, license plates, LP album covers, street signs, etc.--and it all looks real, not like the replicas you'd see at so many chain restaurants. If there's a theme, it's simply "old East Texas stuff."

Service was just a tad slow, but this was mainly due to unfortunate timing: I walked in just as a large group (15+) were placing their orders. There was a young waitress working the whole place alone, rushing around to fill orders and refill drinks for at least 30 customers; but she somehow kept up with every table, smiling the whole time.

Mark your calendars now.  If you have any questions let me know.  Looking forward to riding with you soon

Mapquest says it's 1 1/4 hour drive time from AL Lamb's to the meet up in Van.  That would make TWO (throttles wide open) from Al's by 6:45.  Any one that wants to ride out together meet up at Al's around 6:30

Jim, any way you can reconsider the KSU in Van till a little later?  Give us Dallas folk a little more sleepy time before we have to get there.  My ride time to Al's is almost 30 minutes and I have one of the shortest rides to get there.

Rode it this morning and we will be fine if we leave at 9 AM from Loves.  That will put us in Cushing around 11:45.  I do need to let them know a week ahead of time how many are coming so please let me know.  They have an area that will seat up to 50, not sure we will have tham many but would be nice.  they want to know so they do not book any other groups during that time.
Hope to see all of you on the 17th,  on the way back we may stop in Ben Wheeler at a place called Scoots and Scoops, you got to see this place if you like classic bikes.  Scooters and Blue Bell it dont get any better than that.  Ate lunch there today, catfish lunch plate, 3 large pieces of fish that stretched across the plate, tator tots, and hush puppies for 6.50.  Sat special all the catfish or shrimp you can eat with all the trimmings for 9.99.  The catfish was really good

Chuck - I'd like to suggest you make the meetup in Terrell at the Starbucks we've met at before (I-20 and Hwy 34).  From there, it's only 48 minutes to Van and it will save miles for many to just meet there.

Meet at 7:30, KSU at 8:00 for the ride.  Anyone who wants to get there earlier can drink some of the Starbucks' swill.

Just a suggestion.....

I did the math and I still have to get up early and the distance is still the same for me.   Wink

But fine, Terrell it is, I'll just find some N. Dallasites to ride out with.

There's a Chevron (closed, the last time we passed through) in the SW quadrant of 19 & I-20 in Canton.  If you're coming from the west and meetup there, you could get up at the same time you were already planning and the ride-in to Van from there would be really short!   Cheesy

Knocks out 13 miles for me and drops my time to only an hour and 5 minutes to the meetup in Terrell.

I was really looking forward to this, but my clutch hand is not ready yet.  A long ride on Saturday doesn't sound possible or advisable at this point.   Sad

6:30 am.  In the morning.  0630 if the Gunny is paying attention.

Thag, you going?   We could keep each other awake from Swisher to Al Lamb's.

You guys don't wait for me in Terrell even though I'm just 5 minutes from the meeting place.  This school stuff is interupting my fun!! Besides, I have a flat tire on the rear.  Doesn't make for a real good ride.  Plugged the tire in Somerville last Sat and rode home pulling a trailer on a plugged tire.  It went down again just as I got to my driveway, whew!!!!

 Jim you did good  cooldude

The ride you led was nearly as perfect as the weather (which was REALLY good).

Nice bunch of bikers you gathered up and the food was worth waiting for (30 minutes).

Thanks for allowing us DFW-ers to join in.

2) Fear is good.  When you don't think you are prepared to ride, listen to it.

Sounds like everyone had a good time.  I hope to make the next one.
