I had an appointment in Shreveport yesterday for 3:10. I pulled out a little after 1:00. Man! It was brutal. I'd never been to this place before so I ran 549 (Future I-49) for the 20 miles or so that they've got done, to make good time. Once I hit the two lane Hwy 71, I though it might be a little cooler. (less concrete and more shade.) Can't say I could tell a difference. I was wearing a long sleeved, white cotton shirt. I was bone dry when I reached my destination at about 2:40.
I had an insulated bottle with me, full of ice and water. I'd thrown it in the trunk, but never pulled over to get it out. I drained it once I got to Shreveport. I filled it and drained it again three time from a water fountain in the next hour.
I pulled out of Shreveport a little after 4:00 and stayed on 71 all the way back. This time I hung the water bottle around my neck by it's strap. I emptied it on the way back. The forecast was for 102°. I'm guessing we got there with a little to spare. Surprisingly, it wasn't any worse once I got into to town.
I was OK on the 74 mile run into Shreveport, but I'd hate to think I had to go any further.
