my 1999 tourer is experiencing a shifting problem from first to second only. When I try to shift, I feel it kind of grinding lightly and more often than not, it is in neutral when I let the clutch out. Only when I wait a second while applying a constant pressure on the shifter does it shift into second. All other gears are fine. Suggestions?

Two suggestions.

1.  Go out now, and shift the lever with authority, no lazy shift please.  Still no work right when shifting with authority, try #2.

2.  Move the shifter lever 1 notch 'down' on the mounting post out if the transmission.    No work, try 2 notch's up from current position.

Take the bolt out of the shaft, mark the lever and shaft so you can tell if ya get 1 notch or more.   Put bolt back in and go ride the bike.

NO LAZY shifts please.    The Phat Lady hates these, and  will pop in and out of gear at will.

Only other solution, is find a KickShifter that was made by Rattlebars and put it on.      Don't cuss the heel/toe shifter till ya try one.

Happy Trails.

Yep, I too think that the shift lever mechanism is on wrong.

Either that or the lever is bent.

The whole condition making an upshift difficult because the shift lever is not having enough room to move freely.

I think this happens a lot with aftermarket pipes or when replacing the oil seal on the shift lever shaft.

If you get down and look closely you can clean off the parts and see there are index marks on the pieces that should line up.

+1 on RJ's advice, the shift to second has to get past neutral, the others don't.  Hoser
