The Landmass Between Mobile And New Orleans

« on: August 18, 2011, 07:19:53 PM »

Went riding today and was heading home on a 2 lane section of US 98 between Semmes, AL and the Mississippi State Line. I was a couple of miles from the state line when a hay bale fell off a truck headed the other way into Alabama.  It was bounding and tumbling toward me and entering my line of travel.  My brain went into overdrive trying to anticipate where it was going to bounce and my evasive action.  Luckily as soon as it crossed the center line, it stopped.  I veered to the right around it and continued on my way.  Needless to say it was a heart stopping, seat puckering moment!

Well, I was within 10 miles of the house.  And, yes I made it.   Wink

I Had almost the same experience this week on Interstate 90 in the mountains.  Came around a curve and when I noticed there was a dead animal laying in the lane, a dog or perhaps a coyote, I had just enough time to steer the bike over the neck area of the critter.  It was a pretty good thump and gave me a slight front end wobble and scared the crap out of me.  LONG LIVE THE FAT LADY

If it was really moving fast. You could of tryed the stock car trick. Aim for the wreck. When you get there it will have moved on.

I am always wary around pickups with extension ladders hanging over the tailgate.  They are rarely strapped down and the rungs act like little spoilers that will take air and toss the ladder out into the road in a heartbeat.

Saw an aluminum ladder a few weeks ago that a PU went right straight down the steps of the ladder.     Will say this, those aluminum ones are stronger than I thought.

It bent the steps into a slight 'U', but I think they could of still used it in an emergency.

That was the thing, it would have been really hard to do that.  Everytime it bounced and tumbled its direction of travel toward me changed.

If it was a bale that size I would have filled my drawers.  It was a regular rectangular bale.

I understand the bouncing thing. Here in Minnesota we had two people crushed to death by a big round bail. They were loading them on a trailer when one came off and landed on them. Glad your outcome was a positive one. Posts like this are good to read. It helps to remind myself to not follow to close.

POPS I was NOT following this truck.  It was east bound and I was west bound.

one of the last times i was in el paso TX there was a short extension ladder the ended up cross ways in the middle travel lane. I was in the right lane observing all these people hitting  thier brakes and bouncing over something. folks around there tend to travel too close to the car in front of them so the reaction time was not enough to miss it.   got to have some room to react angel

I hit a crushed beer can in a corner the other day.  Front tire slipped about 6" out from under me before it hooked back up.

It took me about 20 minutes to get the sphincter wrinkles out of my saddle.
