Greetings! Any ideas or direct knowledge of anyone swapping a G'wing 1800 engine into a Valk? I ask because there is a wrecked G'wing at a local junk yard for sale. They estimate a $14K repair cost so it's considered totaled and will go for parts only etc. Mostly things are bent/scratched or missing. (Looks like it didn't hit anything hard, just went down and slid a mile) The engine starts fine and idles all OK. Would it fit at all? Would it be worth the trouble? I've got a 2000IS w 72K that runs fine. Just a thought. Peace

anything can be done! sawzall, torch, welder. you'll be adapting the harness/computer. and a dozen other items. sounds like a fun project when your bike hits 500.000 miles or so, not before.

How about a GL1500 engine/drive train? I don't really need all this power (though it IS fun) and reverse gear might be handy... Fred.

If reverse is what you want, the Valkyrie models sold in Japan had reverse, so the parts are out there.

The 1800 wouldn't have petcock issues, that's for sure. I might think of starting that project myself in 15 years. Haven't rode a bike yet that performs like the valk. The goldwings are geared a lot higher which means less fun. Imho

It can be done. But it would be very, very time and $$$ consuming.

Yep! It works! there's a guy up here in Quebec that has a Valk with the Goldwing GL1500 transmission (with reverse). I have not examined it very closely but do know that they took the Goldwing transmission and put it beside the Valk transmission on a work bench in order to know which parts to swap, etc. It works exactly like it did on the original Goldwing.

I like the reverse idea. Isn't the GL1500 short block the same as the Valk short block? With the only difference being in the heads and the carbs?

It'd probably be easier to take an 1800 Wing and strip it down and make a Valk out of it.

Yes and the primary drive gears, adjustable solid valve train, exhaust system, air cleaner assembly and intakes to the head, (no) fuel pump, coolant port for the carb heater, I think that is about it.

I've read the old article about the Japanese bikes with reverse, and it said the other Valks couldn't be changed to have reverse. I would think there would be some froame modifications to be made etc. I'd like to find out how Normand's friend did it. Fred.

back in the 60's we shoehorned a 327 chevy into an mgb, a 289 ford into a vw, and the jokers car club adapted a 389 pontiac into a lawnmower.'
anything can be done if you are mechanic enough to do it and have the tools. adapting an 1800 into a valkyrie is not a hard job. you just have to make sure you get the computer, etc. with the motor. the rest is just motor mounts and custom driveline.
a good wrench could do it in a few days.
changing a valk for a 1500 wing is even easier, you need a goldwing interstate engine to make it a snap, no reverse to monkey with.
i just installed a roadsmith trike kit on my 99 standard -- 8.8 inch mustang third member, tubes cut and porche / vw CV joints with disc brakes, springs, plus progressive suspention coilovers in a triling arm configuration, all this bolts up in about 3 hrs.
1800 in a valk --- peice of cake ! don't think so -- go look at a boss hoss !

No frame modifications. The guy told me that they put the "reverse gear" parts, etc. from the GL1500 Goldwing onto his Valk. Reverse gear: Reverse bar: Note: The reverse operates from the starter motor. Description from the net: "The five-speed transmission uses special drive gears to provide a quiet, lash-free driveline. The fifth gear is an overdrive gear with a convenient indicator light on the dash. The transmission also has a reverse gear that is activated -- with the transmission in neutral -- by pulling up a lever located on the left inboard fairing side panel. Thumbing the starter button operates the starter motor which transfers power to the final drive through a set of reduction gears."I vaguely remember seeing a lever on the left side of his Valk (lower than the alternator). That's what he used to put it in reverse. Next time I see him, I'll ask questions and take pics.
