Having intermitent prioblem. Was on way home from work today. 99.5 miles bike noses over and flipped over to reserve and it took off. It has done this once before. I stopped and got fuel at 105 miles. Bike took 3 gallons. So 35 mpg is about normal. but I can't figure out why it died at 100 miles at 3 gallons. It normally goes up into the mid or upper 130 range before going to reserve. I am thinking possible fuel strainer. Was planning on risding bike on vacation starting Saturday, but now not sure I have time to repair, and I know I don't trust it like it is.

Have you made any modifications to your fuel line? I put on the RedEye quick disconnect and ended up taking it off for that reason.

No modifications. Fuel system totaly stock. Just seems weird it will do it 1 out of 10 or 15 tanks of gas.

Mine did that. It was the early sign of petcock problems. I had to rebuild the cover set on the petcock. You might also check the vacuum line to the petcock.

It can also be a problem in the vent line, but more likely your vacuum line to the petcock or a failure in the petcock. Just a guess.

Typical start of diaphram failure in the petcock. Put in a new one.

I think it's too early to worry about it since it has only happened one time before. Sure would keep an eye on it however. What was your response when it happened the first time? That's why I say to wait. It may not happen again. The only fuel strainer is the screen that is on the petcock that is inside the tank and that is usually never a problem. An addition of some fuel additive might be a good idea. And finally, I would suggest to look at the connection between the knob and the petcock to be sure it is operating freely and you can actually feel the detent from the ball inside the petcock seating in the proper position. ***

I am going to [pull it apart and rebuild petcock and replace strainer. The reason I was thinking strainer. My wife has a 750 Shadow. I got where it would only go about 80 miles and run out. The strainer was collapesed and would not pick up fuel when low in tank. Whatwever problem is I want it fixed. I am riding Goldwing on vacation. Don't have the time this week to ride much and I am bnot going to leave with a bike I am worried about.

Jerry, Ya wimp! Just ride the thing! What's a little fuel delivery issue when you're on vacation? They say "a bad day riding is better than a good day at work", so what's the problem with being out of gas on the side of a back road in Nowhere, Arkansas? Heck, just this past Saturday our trike was out of air in the air shocks (blown seal) and left us "almost" stranded. It's an adventure! JUST KIDDING YA BUDDY! Thanks again for dinner last night. You and Cheryl be safe and have a great trip. See ya soon! Cruisin' Dave

Rebuilding after a few years is not a bad idea. Especially when you see the amount write ups around here about petcock issues.

Do you really need a repair?????? I had the same thing happen while riding to Spokane for jury duty..100 miles, then reserve....Found that some dumb ass had been running with the choke partway on..turned off the choke, back to 34 mpg.

OP said it took 3 gallons to fill up at reserve. His MPG were good.
