This was my cousin in Paris Texas yesterday. He was 61 yrs old. He and his wife were on their Goldwing Trike pulling their waverunner to the lake yesterday when an 18 wheeler pulled out in front of them. They went under it killing them both instantly. so far we have not officially heard who was at fault. The family there said the 18 wheeler pulled out in front of them but I haven't seen any official rulling yet |

Thinking about my cousins accident in Paris Texas yesterday I got to reflecting about my riding career. I'm 60 yrs old, and have been riding all my life, got my first motorbike at age 14, had one ever since. Riding motorcycles has always been my passion. But today, thinking about my cousins accident, I got to thinking about all the close calls I've had in those many years of riding. As a teenager I had several falls on small cc bikes, and about 13 yrs ago I had a major accident on my BMW K bike. I lost it in a curve out in the country on a dew soaked road. The accident almost got me, took a long time to recover from the injuries. However, I had no hesitation to get back on a motorcycle, it is just in me to ride. I've ridden a lot more defensive since then. Back in the 80's I took a fall on Pikes Peak on the dirt road at the top on an old 70 BMW R75. When the bike went down I landed on top of it and it was spinning in a circle to beat the band and getting closer and closer to the edge.....a sheer drop off....but I managed to get to the throttle and shut it down. Got out of that with just a little road rash, could have been a lot worse.
Today I was thinking of all the close calls I've had and I guess all in all I've been very lucky. I've had some really close calls in my life.
When you get on a motorcycle to take a ride you never know what is out there lurking in the shadows. You never know if today is your day to take a fall. I guess that is a calculated risk we all take. Ride defensive my friends and keep those eyes open to all that is happening around you. Ride safe.

As for the close calls over the years, I have had the same. Funny, but somehow my own close calls never got me to consider giving up my two wheeled passion. I have lost several friends and close acquaintances as a result of M/C accidents. Those have given me all kinds of thoughts and considerations, and on at least two occassions have caused me to not ride for at least six months. Never did sell my bikes because of it, but sure weighed the consequences a lot more closely. Maybe that is so because we only hear the final results, rather than going through the "moment". Hard to explain, but I guess what I mean is that every close call I have had has taught me something that I can do better, or safer, while with my friends, the finality of the results left me just paranoid. Don't know if that makes sense, but...
Now as I have gotten older, just turned 63 six days ago, I don't think I would give up riding. I guess that I realize that there are many things that are out there that are hazardous to me, and I guess that my life experiences have made it possible for me to do a risk assessment that balances heavily toward doing what I enjoy, for as long as I can. I've lost a lot of friends in the past several years due to illness, and I guess that I have decided that I choose to follow my passion, since the future is not known to any of us. But we know that life is fragile. However, it is also precious, and it would be a waste to not live it to the fullest, and for me that includes motorcycling.
Digger, it sounds like we both have the same thoughts. Only you can know what is right for you.
