September 10, 2011, I'll be at the Red River County Stew Cookoff.

click for info

Cost-Stew $5 for adults and $3 youth gets you a bowl and you can sample as much stew as you can hold. There's also an auction, which is usually interesting, and live music. All proceeds go to the Red River County fair, which is free to the public (last free county fair in Texas!)

Last year we had some 25 entries, and trust me, that's a LOT of stew! (and they were GOOD)...

They start serving at 5pm, but you can come early to preview the auction or chat with the cooks.

Last year Serk came up to lend a hand, but even the two of us together barely made a dent. This is a fun and tasty event. Dude's like 7 foot tall...you'd think he could hold more stew! Smiley

Serk! You gonna make it this year? I can't imagine the wee-three could eat very much but being your offspring they probably could!

Dude... I'm sitting here salivating just THINKING about that stew!!! I'm gonna put in a request with the spousal unit and see if I can get a day pass to head out there again, that stuff was EXCELLENT!
And with the triplets, I _NEED_ a ride right now! Took my first ride in over a month yesterday, the 5 minutes to and from my parent's house, but even that was such a relief to take...

To anyone else anywhere NEAR local to here, I highly recommend making the trek out for this, that was some seriously good food for $5!

Almost forgot, heya Daniel, you get to be a judge again this year?

The ingredients list had me a little concerned, but DANG it was good once they stewed it all together!

*Hanging my head in shame* I don't think I've even put 3,000 miles on my poor neglected Valk since last year... Granted, I've got a pretty good excuse but dang, I need to ride more!

It'd put me over the top alright! You tight with any REALLY good divorce lawyers?  Cheesy Believe me I _SO_ wish I/we could make it, but it's just not in the cards just yet...  Cry

(And, I've done a few thousand since that picture was taken, so it's already rolled over the big 100,000, I was just lamenting that I haven't gotten a WHOLE lot more since then...)

So, barring any major changes, spousal unit has committed to her and I riding out here for this... Anyone else think they might go? If you're on the fence, it's worth it, and the weather is glorious, come on out and join us!

That's the reason I will be in town. I'm picking up a new to me bike Saturday morning.  Smiley

Might be a nice maiden ride.  Will have to consult the cruise director.

If you wanna go, and prefer a group, Tarynn and I will be heading out from Rowlett around 2PM or so... (Rowlett's east of the metromess, so we're kinda on the way.) We could meet up either at our house or somewhere else near here if you want...

Heads up though - We both tend to ride on the..... spirited... side... Smiley

(P.S. If the cruise director is susceptible to this kind of bribe, you could mention if ya' meet us at our place she could get to see the triplets for a bit before we head out...  Wink )

Supposed to be in Decatur for the day, but might try to leave early and head east for some stew if the timing works.  If I don't make it, enjoy the grub.

Sorry all, I know I'm going to miss a great time (again  Sad), but there's no way I can be there Saturday.  I won't be heading south until mid-day Sunday.  Come to think of it, I guess I could swing through to see if there are any leftovers!

Sharon and I ran up to Clarksville for the Stew Cook-off.
We left about 1:30 and got into Clarksville about 2:45. We met
Daniel Meyer and some of his friends, as well as Hayhauler and
BJ and Serk and his wife.
We stayed until after the auction. We left about 6:30 and stopped
by the Victorian house for a quick visit before we left. I can't speak
for all, but a good time was had by us. Wink

Daniel - Thank you for the invite, and for the hospitality! (Carrie as well)

HayHauler and BJ - It was a pleasure and an honor to share some wind with ya'll, not to mention getting to go along for the inaugural ride of ya'll's new toy! VERY nice bike!

We definitely had an extra large time, hope we're able to make it again next year... I'm somewhat disappointed with myself, I think I only managed to sample seven or eight of the 30 different stews this year, but the ones I tried were all excellent (Although the Rotary Club's was slightly more excellent than the others by our reckoning...)

LOVE that shot!

BTW There is a burn ban in Red River County, but this was a County and Fire Department sanctioned event. They had to approve the site for each fire, and they had a brush truck stationed at the event. They also checked each fire afterward to make sure they'd been properly extinguished.

I was thinking we need to put this on the calendar as a ride for next year, 2012.  It's before the end of the world so we all should be able to put it on our schedule.

I've read that it's the first weekend of September but it seems to actually happen the 2nd Saturday in September.  Based on that, September 8th, 2012 appears to be the date of the next one.  If so, let's make it a club ride.

Sounds good to me...I may be able to put some folks up on a couch or in the odd corner or two if they want to overnight. We also have a big yard for tenting, and there is a clean/inexpensive mom and pop motel just on the edge of town.

I'll firm up the date as soon as I can...I do the chamber of commerce website so will be one of the first to know...

I had a great time!!
