No good deed goes unpunished

« on: August 29, 2011, 04:52:43 PM »

not sure why yet, but out riding when I started smelling rubber on left hand turns. Cecked tir eand noticed it was wearing on the right sidewall.  I went darkside last year and this is the first time it has done this. I'm urunning a Yokohama Avid/envigor 205/60- R16. It's was pretty tight on the right side  when I installed it but never rubbed.
Question: will a spacer or several washhers on that side help?
Any other suggeestions?
Thanks.  Raul

I'm sure others reply will be better. But my first thought was the bearing.

I also don't think you'll be able to add any kind of spacers.

Did you do the nut cage mod when you went darks side?  Check the nut on right side rear fender bolt may have come loose. If all is tight. Check left bearing !

Looking at the picture closer. It looks like the inside nut on the right rear fender bolt is the bad guy doing the damage uglystupid2

That is definitely the right side rear fender nut.  Daniel Meyer told me to put duct tape on all areas where I thought it could rub and then take a short ride.  Where ever the tape was damaged would be the rub point.   On mine, with the nut cage mod and one washer on the washer mod, it still hit.

Go to 3 washers on the washer mod and reverse the bolt, if you haven't done so, such that the head is inside and the nut outside.  I also ground the head on mine down to half of what it normally was.  Between all of that, I now have good clearance.

The washer mods pushes the fender to the right and away from the tire.

But if it wasn't doing this and now is, then you may have a bad bearing.  I did.

Good luck!

I just went through a similar proble.  Very long thread about CT rubbing a few weeks ago.  The culprit was the previous owner.  He put a 3/8" bolt with the head on the inside on the FRONT mounting point.  It is supposed to have a 10mm bolt threaded in from the outside, so there is nothing sticking out on the inside.  Worth looding at.  If you have a nut on the outside of the front mount.  There is your problem.

When I did the nut cage mod I kept the original nut and bolt. But didn't get to it yesterday. Might see if I can work on it tonite.

thanks all for the input.

You can crane a little and with a flashlight look up in there under the fender and most likely see where it is rubbing if it is indeed rubbing under there.

The tire rubbing on any metal will have surely polished it quite a bit and that place ought to look like a mirror reflecting in the flashlight beam.

Relatively easy.  Keep the rear fender bolt in and remove the middle one.  Slide a washer in between the fender rail and fender.  As the middle of the fender rail is pushed out it pulls the rear of the fender rail and fender out.

Does this work on an Interstate. Searching the forums, seems everyone that has done the washer mod has a standard.

you guys made it sound easy.  Almost thought I was going to remove the trunk to get the washer in place. now just need the rear holes to line up so the bolt goes back in.

Thanks , Raul

Of course this leads to my finding the bushing on the shock needs replacing. Maybe thats why its seems to be wobbling in turns......
