What does the data say?

Corinth, Texas

« on: September 04, 2011, 07:34:18 PM »

Huntersgt184 (Larry) from Texas has his bike stuck in Cody, WY.  The symptoms sound like a bad pinion/pinion cup.  If we can get parts to Cody by Wednesday, is there anyone in the area who can help with the change out?

Talk about bad luck.  I'm no where near and couldn't do much to help if I was except trailer it in but, here's a bump for the cause.    Keep trying, someone is surely in the area.

Thanks, Fudgie.

They look like an ATV & snowmobile dealer only.  Do they sell/service bikes?

I see that now. Maybe they can do the work or at least help him find a dealership. A long shot will let the Valk rider do the work himself in their shop.

Thanks, Fudgie.  It'll be passed along.

The bike's immobile so if it doesn't get fixed in Cody, it'll probably get towed home.

Where are you located in Cody? There's about a half dozen GWRRA members in Cody, and per the membership Gold Book some list tools, trailer, etc., available. If you can't get it fixed at Rogers, I can call a couple of them and I'll bet even though you're not a GWRRA member they'd lend a hand. That's one of the reasons I maintain my membership with that club, plus the towing as part of the membersip. If nothing else, it might give you a place to work on the bike. Also, that Rogers Sport Center is listed in the Gold Book as a dealer so probably does work on bikes.

It's not me that's stuck there, so I'm not sure of their exact location.  All I know is that the bike was towed to an independent motorcycle shop.

Disco and I are monitoring this thread for them as they don't have internet service.  When they check in, we'll pass along your info.  It is much appreciated.

Posting for Huntersgt184.

We're back in Cody, parts should be in this morning.  It was the splines. (Not sure if the tire was not aligned properly back in DFW when the rear tire was replaced.) Rodgers Sports is a Honda dealer that was able to order the parts, the service is being done by a local bike shop, Thads Cycle Shop (no relation) since they had already started the service.

Thanks for all the help... still able to have a great vaction despite the major bike issue.

Was it the splines in the hub or the pinion splines?

While you are stuck in Cody - go to the town's biggest attraction, Hotel Irma. Find the manager, "Jerri". Tell her you know GiG from Detroit. She will then charge you 2X. Have fun & good luck!

In regards to the splines, both the wheel and the part on the final drive were worn down badly.   When they ordered the parts at the honda dealership.. it was discovered the next day that one of the parts is no longer available for the Valk but it had to be cross referenced with the 1500 goldwing.   What a headache.
Well, everything was finally completed late today and they are on the road.

Thanks for all the help... It was a long ride back in the Uhaul.

The shop owner didnt have internet access at the shop and our access was very spotty so we didnt download the Tech Manual.

Once we got home and saw the Tech manual, I saw lots of issues with the way they put things (or didnt put) back together. I have the (VERY EXPENSIVE) box o'parts and will be working on getting the bike back together with ThagAndy.

the next time one of you need help out there, go to www.cmausa.org mouse on find a chapter, call the chapter officers and tell them the problem, someone will be right there.

my wife and i have trailered and stored dozens of wrecked bikes, and repaired dozens of broke ones in my shop. i don't even throw away used tires if they have a few thousand miles on them, someone might get home on one.

might even find dinner in the deal -- right evan?

no, joe- we have never charged a "brother" biker for anything here. never charged to pick up a wrecked bike, never charged to repair one, never charged for a meal, what parts we had that we did sell, we charged a fair price and every part sold within a week. we are part of the CMA family. we are here to help folks. that isn't true with all people who call themselves bikers, now is it ?

but God loves them too. even when they call well meaning people "greedy" just because they won't give something away that someone thinks they should. you know the kind of person i am talking about, right ?

Greed ....I will always see you that way  cooldude  I offered you $326.00 for a used final drive and you claimed a new one was over $1,600 so you'd hook me up for half-price...I'm not your brother and damn proud of it.
